It depends!
You don't play a cymbal one way or a high hat. You don't grab a pencil in your fist and draw!
Everything is about texture and touch. You can play an edge, or top, tip or edge, or cup with the tip or stick. There are regions and touches within those. My God. It's not mechanical, it's artistic.
Once your have the necessary skills, (yea I know that's vague) do the touch, play the sound that meets the need. There is no How To beyond, first learn basic mechanics and second what's in your heart and soul and EAR.
