Thanks for the advice, Powertone. And I think your drum looks fine. I would be happy with those results. What do you use to clean yours?
Hoping for a little help.
I got lucky on that drum as it wasn't as tarnished. I would start with using a very soft damp 100% cotton cloth and removing the dirt to see what you have under there. You could also hit it with some windex and a soft cloth to remove the dirt. Some folks recommend a Dawn detergent bath (just make sure you get all the moisture out of the soldered bearing edges.) Do the same for the hoops. Clean and lubricate the tension rods (I use a "Mystery Oil" soak for a few hours and that does a decent job of cleaning off the worst junk and lubricating). Install some modern heads and wires and enjoy (those Standards favor a nice medium tuning). I think you may be surprised at how nice it will look.
Those nickel over brass shells are very tempting to polish because they come out nice. Just remember, you can't put back what you remove, so if you do decide to use a polish, go very easy as that nickel is soft.
To me, there is nothing wrong with a vintage piece looking vintage. That gives em some serious mojo. Kind of like vintage cymbals...... You hate to see a nice old K polished. Just doesn't look right.
Again, just my two cents. There are many other opinions out there.
