Help Pricing a Camco Oaklawn 4 piece set!?!

Loading...

Hi.

I have a 1969 Oaklawn Camco set that I'd like to sell. I'm uncertain of it's fair value/price. I would appreciate any help in this I can get. I posted --I'm beginning to think prematurely- a for sale notice in the Forums For Sale threads asking for offers. I'm beginning to think that this is not the way to go. Below I've pasted in the kit description and the address of a website to view the drums. I would value any assistance you guys may have to offer in establishing a price/value range. Thanks very much. Here's the notice;

Hi

This is my first post and I'm selling a 1969 Oaklawn Walnut Stain 4 piece set. 8X12, 9X14, 16x16 and 16 x 24 bass drum. I ordered this from the Pro Drum Shop in Hollywood from Bob Yeager that year.

This is the Jim Keltner-Jim Gordon "Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour" configuration. I was told at the time that those drums were ordered from this shop. Can't verify that, but it certainly excited me. Everything on these drums is original except where noted.

Both bass drum heads are original, bottom floor tom head is original and all the rest of the heads are coated Ambassadors top and bottom.

At the time of purchae, rather than order the double tom tom mount from Camco, I had Yeagers shop techs order and install a classic Rogers Swiv-o-Matic set on the BD and Toms. At the time I wanted the adjustability of that piece of hardware.

The Swivomatic has one replacement set screw, 2 tom hoops are not original, 8+ tension rods also after market. Shell bearing edges are beautiful. and reringed.

I have a series of pictures you can view by going to http://drumdrome.yolasite.com/

and clicking on the Camco 4 piece drumset banner at the top of the website,

At the end of the photo series I have tried to show closeups of the condition of the wood. You'll note scratches, clear coat gone, some scuffing and some loss of some surface and some divoting of the shell/s. More on the rack toms than anywhere. The BD has a ring of raised grain in the clear coat on the outside of the shell. These are/were players drums and even though always cased, they sustained some scuffing up. They show the traditional pedal and claw rash on the wooden hoops of the BD.

That said, they play great. Monster sound. They like a variety of tuning ranges. The Bass Drum kills. What you'd expect from Camco gear of this Vintage and shells of this quality.

I'll entertain reasonable offers on these guys. For more details, questions or if you want to make an offer, please contact me through the VD forum by private email or through eBay at up-n-square .

Thanks a lot. Hope to hear from you. CHS3

There are many factors to consider when pricing Camco drums from condition, sizes and finish to name a few. The most desirable Camco drums would be the 20/12/14 w/ matching snare in 3D Moire. Those command big bucks in the $8,000 - $10,000 range. The early to mid 60's COB hoops also help drive the price up. Once you get into different sizes, especially bass drums and floor toms the price can drop dramatically. A 16x16 floor tom is considered average but a 16x18 floor tom will drive the price up although not as much as a 14x14. A natural maple finish is also more desirable than the common walnut finish. But moss green is the rarest and also worth the most of the lacquer and stained finishes.

I think if your kit had an 18" floor tom instead of the 16" floor tom it would be worth a bit more. The swivo hardware is a nice plus but won't necessarily be worth more. Looking at your kit in it's condition and sizes I would think a realistic price would be in the $1500-$2000 range IMO.

Thanks very much for all the information. This is exactly the kind of expertise/help I was hoping to tap. Thoughtful, insightful. I'm obliged to you for taking the time to respond so fully.

Anyone else out there agree or disagree or have a different take on this?

Do the 3-D's really sell for that much? I wasn't aware that there was such a demand for them. I thought Gretsch were the high dollar drums.

Well it depends on a few factors as they must be Oaklawns with COB hoops and in the 20/12/14 configuration w/ matching snare. I know of one kit that sold 3 times for $8500!

If the bass drum is an 18", the price will jump to $10K or more!

I would probably list this set on my website for $1600 - $1800, and would consider any offers over $1000.

Thanks,

Bill
