Hello all! Just scored these Slingy shells Last viewed: 49 minutes ago

I'm back in the vintage drum world, as I just found a deal on these Slingerlands, so I thought I would join the community here and say hi.

I'm thrilled because I always played Slingys years ago, and stupidly sold my last set of them several years ago due to a move and not having anywhere to store them. Before telling you about this new find, I'll tell you what I got rid of DOH I had a set that was built up by the guy named Neil, can't remember his last name, in Ft. Wayne, IN who also built Neil Peart's drums at the time. They were a five piece but I was told by Neil, built to Neil Peart's specifications. They had vibrafibe coating inside the shells, and had a heavy duty Pearl tom mount, and Tama Titan hardware. They played like a dream, and I was an idiot for selling them, but I wasn't playing at the time - concentrating on family and work. I didn't pick up a stick again for over 10 years, then decided to get back on the horse and bought a cheap set of Ludwig Accent Plus. Long story short, I'm back in a gigging band, working more than I ever did, and it was time to find something better, and I've kicked myself daily for selling my beloved Slingerland custom set.

So, here's what I found. A friend at work told me about that site shopgoodwill.com, and I was browsing there and lo and behold, there was this set of toms and kick drum (they also were throwing in a newer Ludwig kick pedal which I'll sell off). I bought them for $159!! I've dated them by serial number according to the timeline on this site at around 1977-ish. They're concert toms which I'm not thrilled about, but I'll make them work. Shells and bearing edges are in great shape, very little pitting on any chrome - all hardware works great, the chrome wraps are in good shape with some dings and scratches but not enough to make me want to re-wrap them - I'd rather keep them original. The front hoop and tension hardware are not original, and I'll be looking to replace those. I found a same vintage COS Slingy snare used at Guitar Center for $150 that is in almost perfect shape except for the dreaded missing zoomatic knob. I'm on the lookout for one of those as well. Other than that, I'm now rocking with a nice set of Slingys again and I'm working to set things right in my drumming world and make up to myself for my stupid mistake :)

So anyway, hi all and looking forward to hanging out here.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Howdy and welcome to VDF. Nice Slingerlands too!! Great score for $159!! They really cleaned up well. Your old drums sounds pretty cool also. Many of us wish we still had our old kits!! I do. It's funny your story is almost the exact same as mine even down to the Ludwig Accents!! LOL. I sold my old Slingerlands years ago too and did the family thing. I bought my first vintage Slingerland kit just about a year ago. Just finished my 2nd kit yesterday. Last weekend I came home with project kit #3. Walking I got hooked pretty good it's a very addictive hobby. I hope to be playing out soon too. Those chrome over wood wraps look so cool. Ever since I saw a pic Nigel Olsens COW Slingys kit long ago I wanted one. Do you have any pics of your old custom kit?

Welcome! We all do foolish things, there is even a few threads on the subject. Good news is you scored a really nice kit for peanuts. Great looking kit. The fact you were looking out for your family tells me your a "good" guy. A far as the rack goes, who cares, I mean really, who?

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I know, the rack is definitely not in keeping with the vintage thing. Story on that is, someone broke into my car one night after a gig and stole my hardware case! It was cheaper to go with this rack that I got on clearance than buy stands at the time. And have to admit, it's nice for gigs so I'll probably keep it for that, but maybe I'll start accumulating Slingy hardware here and there for when I have the set at home, and just so I can know I have a full matching set.

I don't think I do, unfortunately. I wish I did. The guy who built it up also re-wrapped the shells white. It looked great.
