This is probably a dumb question to most of you but I am a total beginner with drums, is there something you guys use for hearing protection that still lets you hear the drums and cymbals? I am slowly adding a set of Paiste 2002 cymbals to the beautiful '58 Krupa Deluxe set I got recently from a member here and got a crash cymbal tonight, after 30 minutes my ears are ringing BAD and they actually hurt:( They were ringing a little bit before with the drums, 15" sound edge hi hats and 24" ride but it's really bad now with the addition of the crash.

... ear-buds!
Vic Firth has a most excellent set of closed-back headphones. The sound reproduction is so-so, but the hearing protection is STELLAR!!!
Dead dogs like rusty fire hydrants!!!
I used the predecessors (Norton Sonic II) to these for many years. Helped quite a bit, but took some getting used to in order to get a good seal in the ear.

I have used those in the past there is one problem... I lose ear plugs CONSTANTLY and at 10 bucks a pair they are expensive to replace a lot. That is why I stick with regular foam ear plugs.
That being said if you don't lose ear plugs, those plugs are the best I have used.

I agree with bunny a have a few pairs of the vic firth closed back head set, i used them all the time for practice or just to listen to music. And when they go i will get more, big band for a small price. Watch your ears brother when the hearing is gone it's gone, don't be that drummer.

I am that guy...too many shows watching Jerry rip it up while Mickey, Brent/Vinnie/Bruce (whoever was alive at the time on keys) Bobby, Phil and Bill killed the rest of the intricacies. Of course this band has a name, could or would any of you care to venture a guess?

I use a cheap, active noise-canceling head set when practicing in the basement and when I'm using the chain saw outdoors. They're great. They have a built-in mic and volume control so you can either shut out all sound or turn up the volume control dial to let in just as much external sound as you like. Sound quality is poor but for $15 they save what hearing I have left (after 45 years of drumming, the ringing in the ears is now permanent).
