Head Recomendation needed for 1960's Gretsch Bass Drum

Loading...

Hi Guys,

I just picked up a 1960's Gretsch kit that I'm cleaning up. I need to choose new batter and resonant base drum heads. It is a 14x20 kick and I'll be using it for jazz. Standard heads seem awfully tight. It has the felt muffler on the batter side. I do not plan to port the resonant head.

I'm looking for recommendations.

Thanks.

Greg

You might try Aquarian American Vintage heads. The flesh hoop has a slightly larger diameter for each head size.

The Evans Level 360 White Coated heads work great on the old Gretsch shells as well.

I bought Evans 360 heads for the toms and snare. I haven't heard much about their bass drum heads. Is there are particular set that you recommend to get that vintage bass drum sound?

my first recommendation would be a good old coated Ambassador

they are slightly tight on my RB kits but sound amazing

since you have the Pratt system you will not need any additional muffling

second would be G1 coated

the level 360 heads go on my RB very easily and sound quite good as well

According to Evans, they are releasing the G1 360 bass drum heads in a couple weeks. I think I'll wait for those. The G1 360's sound fantastic on the toms and snare.

Ive used a hacksaw and cut the hoop at 12 and 6, just about all the way through. Then snap it by hand. I like coated amb batter or res, or smooth white amb for the res. I also like the evans coated emad with no muffler in the head or felts. That combo is more punchy than the amb

Came here to say this. I have the modern vintage on my bass and it's wonderful. I use EQ3s on my other kits.
