Hanging cymbals

Loading...

Not vintage, and probably wrong crowd to ask, but this is the only forum I cruise, so here goes............

I have about 7 or 8 cymbals currently not on my drum rack, and it really ticks me off that they are on the bench, and not in the lineup. I picked up another rack, and plan on making it a double-decker, if you will. So, I want to hang a bunch of cymbals mostly because it looks pretty cool, and will keep some stuff out of the way for the mandatory 5 roto toms to be front-and-center.

The question is have any of you guys ever hung your cymbals, and what did you do to not have to worry about them coming loose and cutting off a foot/toe, or worse, damaging a drum or another cymbal????

My gut says a dab of loc-tite on the wing-nut will ease the worrying, but I figured someone here may have a nugget worth mining.

toodles

If you are going to set these up and leave them up for a decent length of time, then I might suggest a couple of things:

- Take a second to hand tighten the inverted hardware each time you sit down to play.

- I don't know what the actual thread is on a standard cymbal stand but you could put a flat fender washer, then a standard nut and then back up the nut with a cymbal wing nut. The two nuts together work a lot like your hi-hat clutch

- Try som Loc-Tite as you mentioned. If you do this, make CERTAIN you are using the blue and not the red. The red is pretty permanent and requires heat, tools, jack-hammers, etc. to remove. The blue is made to be removed, but requires some muscle. I am not sure how much muscle would be required on a cymbal wing nut. That might be a little scary.

I do know back in the hair metal days, that we put cymbals up inverted with just the wing nut and a nice fay felt. Anything more than that would have taken way to long for load-in and load-out.

Whatever you do, be sure to post a picture or two or three when you are done.

This is the method that I would recommend as tnsquint stated...Once you lock the two nuts together with wrenches or by hand, the only way that they will loosen up is with wrenches or by hand...

Cant you get those wing nuts with the hard plastic inner lining, you know the ones that are real hard to turn. Not sure what the technical name of these are but they do exist. Might not work either, just an idea.

Thank you!

"Ny-Lock" wing nuts is what you would want, and they would work fine, but would eventually have to be replaced every so often as they "wear" in some. Should be available in both SAE and Metric threads. Any hardware store or I see even Menards now has a large selection of that type of stuff.

My only experience with hanging cymbals was the time I went to see another band practice, and sat in on his drums for a song or two.

The guy had 3 crash cymbals hanging from the ceiling of their practice space, attached by ropes about 4 feet long! The cymbals would swing around like monkeys.

Yes, he managed to use less stands this way, but being decapitated was a genuine concern!!

Thanks for the replies gents! I had also thought of intentionally fouling the last two threads with a pair of channel-locks, but didn't want to say that out-loud on here, and hoped a non-destructive idea would surface. I was really worried about my kids or their friends having a go at my kit while I was on the road and a cymbal coming off and.......crying2-07

I found some pretty good pics from around the web and hopefully I can put something together that doesn't look like some mook poser wanted a big drum rack to hack around on.....Laughing HLaughing H (even if that IS the case.....Laughing H)

Thanks again!

You are a poser, so why would you be concerned about that? :D

On my wedding kit, the cymbal arms have the Yamaha thread. Using a Yamaha cymbal sleeve (which includes the washer built in), then there is a felt for each side and then another Yam washer cut off from a sleeve, then the wingnut. Never had a problem....

Good luck....
