Hands! Last viewed: 7 hours ago

After practice on Friday, I noticed that my hands

Felt unusually tired. Almost cramp like.

I didn't play any differently, (as in holding my sticks

tight or anything like that )

The only thing I can think is that I used

a wood shell snare. As daft as it sounds,I've never used a wood

shell snare before. Would the difference in material

be of any significance.

Drums are loud....So play them LOUD!!!

I never had this problem. What about drinking some water when you are at practice?.The shell of the snare drum should not be a problem. The only problem with my hands over the years is sometimes i hit the metal rim with a part of my hands.....Mikey

I'm not a doctor , but I've got enough aches and pains. Good nutrition, exercise, including stretching are more important now, than when I was young. Mentally I still think I can push hard, but realistically no. I've had a few " where did this come from?" problems, that were related to overuse.

Mikey is right on about water; most of us do not need powerdrinks, etc.

Gloucosamine/chondrotin and vit B complex will help joints and nerve damage. You don't need large doses. I get severe spasms from disc and hip problems . Arnica ( an herb) comes in creams for topical use and pills for oral. It is safe, been around a long time and does not burn or freeze like Icyhot, etc. I have used the arnica cream on 2 ganglion cysts, along with targeted stretching and strengthening. Both times the cysts disolved back into my system, pain gone within a couple of months. No surgery. I am not a paid endorser.

Thanks for all your replys. I pretty much thought

it woul be an issue with tiredness or some sort

Just thought I'd ask my friendly experts

Another reason for asking, is because I had

a similar kind of thing after trying carbon fibre

sticks. Hence my asking if it would

the change in material

Thanks again my friends

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I'm almost 63. Been gigging all my life. Right now I gig 3-4 times a week. I gimp around like an old man everyday except when I get behind the kit. Then there is no pain until I get back off and it all comes back. It's part of the life of a drummer. :)

someone ( who is in his 30's) bought some cymbals and a snare from me recently. he's been playing for about 25 years, professionally and gives lessons.

i noticed that he was using a type of stick, that I used to use(maple), until I found some that had better stick definition and gave more separation on most cymbals. i mentioned that and he said he had switched to those because he was getting too much pain from his other (hickory) sticks.

presumably, if vibration and resistance can cause joint pain due to sticks----the response of the head/shell/hoop combination could exert similar forces------so, maybe it wasn't the shell but a combination of elements. perhaps you should try different sticks with that drum?

62 this year Tennitis (severe) and more aches and pains than carter has liver pills but pain lets you know you are still living..... take good vitamins do not smoke, drink to excess,(it dehydrates you) or use to much salt (causes bloating and puffy hands and ankles) drink a lot of water and pay attention to your body get a lot of exercise, and mowing the yard is not exercise get some cardio in 3 or 4 times a week now your stick problem can be from puffyness of hands to to sodium or lack of potassium, or using different size sticks but most likely due to dehydration.....
