G.s. Knapp snare drum Last viewed: 16 hours ago

I picked this one up a few weeks ago. I've got it cleaned and put back together so it can be played.

Nice old drum - 6x15 1/2 metal shell and the wood hoops are in good shape. I tucked a calfhide onto the resonant head. I had to retuck it today because an issue with the gut snares not being able to pass through the counter hoop notch. All I did was notch the flesh-hoop and retuck the head. It's drying now so that should solve the problem.

The batter head that came with the drum has no holes and it may work - I'll see when I crank it down tomorrow. It's probably the dirtiest head I've ever run across! Maybe that's what is holding it together.......I don't want to clean it. Although....if it is mold I will have to clean it.

There was one part I didn't have - the threaded eyebolt that mounts onto the wood hoop where the strainer (with the little fist) runs through. I borrowed one from my Lyon&Healy until I can find one.

The drum came with what looks like the original gut snares. Four

strands were unusable but I did manage salvage 8.

I didn't shine the shell up at all - just cleaned it and the hoops and the rust off the t-rods and other parts. It's playable again.

Gary, nice job!

How much do you want for those sticks? Serious inquiry. I love the bead and taper on those.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Hi John

They're not for sale - sorry - but thanks for asking.

They came with the drum - I don't know how old they are but they could easily be 100 or more years old. I love them as well....very nice balance and I like the tips and taper. I use them and I'm careful; however, they are very sturdy and in excellent condition.

Pix today with 2011 Gretsch kit 18/12/14 gsKnapp 6x15.5 sn (very large deep wood hoops). I'm almost tempted to have a pro drum builder cut the hoops for inlay......but that'd be messing with the drum too much I think. But they would look nice with some gorgeous inlay as some of the drums did back in the day.

I also have a 14x24 late 50's 3ply Gretsch (wmp) cocktail drum in the mix. It came with an old calfhide head....a few small holes in the head....that still sounds pretty good. I was going to cut the drum down to a 14" tom but when it arrived and saw how nice the origianl wmp wrap was I couldn't do it.

The resonant head is still drying but the drum sounds nice and deep - beautiful tone.......I think. It doesn't take much to please me with these old drums because I get so much out of them just from the fact that they are 'back-to-life' and playable. I sat behind this kit a few minutes ago and played some simple jazz and some latin rhythms - fun stuff.
