Gretsch Wine Red Pearl Last viewed: 1 day ago

Check out these beauties. I've never see that color on a small set, and have never seen it on a round badge set. All the similar finishes like emerald green pearl seem to have been on stop sign badge era drums. They also have had metal hoops on the bass drums.

Great playing too, I might add.

Absolutely beautiful... and nice playing too!

As far as that wrap goes they are rare but they are out there... I have a 100% original 20/12/14 RB set myself in that exact same wrap and configuration AND, I have a RB 20/12/14 set in original emerald green too same configuration that I still need to pick up soon.

I also have a super rare SSB 18/12/14 rail mount bop kits in emerald green with matching snare drum...

I believe my two RB kits in these wraps are from 1969 according to the serial numbers and my SSB kit in emerald green I believe is from 1972.

I know guys without any pictures they don't exist...

Those drums are beautiful. I never knew that finish existed on Gretsch. As for the playing, it's not my style at all, sorry to say. Those old K's sound like trash can lids for one, and the solo just doesn't swing very much. It's too abstract for me, and probably one of the reasons I don't have much interest in jazz or jazz drumming after the swing era ended and jazz became "serious listening music," with the advent of bop and modern styles. For instance, I never "got" Elvin Jones at all. He sounds like a drumset being tossed down a flight of stairs. I remember when Elvin died, the Zildjian company put out a tribute ad that said Elvin had the "swingingest beat." I was bemused, to say the least. Give me Rich, Krupa, Big Sid Catlett, Sonny Payne, Papa Joe Jones, or any of the other great jazz and big band drummers who did swing.

I hope I haven't offended any Elvin or modern jazz fans, but that's my opinion.

Here are my two Gretsch kits, I mentioned earlier.

The red RB is a 20/12/14 and the green SSB is a 18/12/14 metal hoop bop kit with matching snare drum.

I'm not sure if the original post is the same set or not but someone here scored a heck of a deal a few years ago. I was browsing my usual CL search and I saw this crappy pic of a drum set dumped on the lawn and the post said "drum set - $100".

I knew instantly that the set was a Gretsch set in this red color and I nearly broke the keyboard trying to type my email as fast as I could. The person actually got back to me and said someone was coming to look and if they passed I would be next. I knew that it was gone at that point and the next day someone here posted the score and it was exactly as I had thought. 20,12,14 RB Gretsch red wine pearl. That was a great steal for 100 bucks!

It's CL posts like this one that keep me up at night! Oh well, win some lose some.

I was watching a PBS concert late night Sat. and the bands were all playing covers. One band comes along and the drummer was using a wine red ripple, round badge kit. Then I noticed the guy looked a lot like Stanton Moore. I just checked and it was. The band was Galactic.

Rick,

The first time I read your post above I missed the word "recorded" and I thought "Holy Crap is he lucky" ;)
