Gretsch tom Ident

This is a question for Rick or anyone else that would have information on this drum - particularly the tom hanger.

I received this drum with no hardware other than the badge (which I carefully removed before painting). As you can see it has an O/W tag with a S/N that I think puts it in about 1963 - see Rick's book information below. However, I can't see a Gretsch drum anywhere in the 60's catalogs that I have access to that has holes like this for the tom hanger. These two 1/4" holes are centered at 2 1/2".

Before I decide to drill 'new' holes - to fit a diamond plate I want to find out if these tom hanger holes are Factory or not. If they're Factory I don't want to drill for the diamond plate. The diamond plate has holes that are greater than 2 1/2" apart.

I recently painted the drum - Hunter Green - Rustoleum rattle can paint from Home Depot. Wet sanded and polished with McGuire's polishing compound. I may use a buffing wheel later on. I put the hardware on just to see how the finish popped so far. I'm not much of a painter but I like to dabble and the drum was bare wood that had the wrap removed when I received it.

I can't see a tom anywhere in the 60's catalogs that shows a single row of lugs and these holes for a hanger. There may be information on the drum out there but I haven't been able to find it so far. Any help would be appreciated.

Gary,

Here is a picture of an older Playboy model 8x12 drum I own that had a mount that would fit those holes. (Note that there is also another non-original mount). This other part of this mount clamped onto the bass hoop.

Rick

EDIT: Your drum had a WMP wrap on it six years ago when I first saw it listed on eBay.

Thanks Rick. I guess I could also try my tom lugs and make this a Concert tom mounting it in a nice snare basket.

I would not mount a C-Tom in a snare basket. Anything touching a C-tom kills it.

Yes - I did think about that after I made the moment. I will put the reso head on the drum but I've decided not to drill the shell for a diamond plate tom mount. I have a 60's RB for this drum and I'll use the modern 302 Series Gretsch Stickchopper hoops (hoop shown in photo above). I've been using a Pearl Snare stand for my 12 Champagne Sparkle tom with my small kit. I adjust it so the curve of the basket has the least amount of 'basket-contact' on the hoop and it seems to work pretty good. I'll do the same for this shell until I have a chance to buy a factory tom hanger.

Got it finished and up n' running. I was having trouble finding 3.25/3.5" t-rods here. I found some 5 and 6" in my stash - cut them down and cut some threads......they work perfect. I had a Thick Stick (50's to 69) RB so it fit the drum just right. I haven't located a tom hanger and I don't want to drill holes in the shell so I'll play it in a snare basket - works fine for me. Clear G1 Evans and a Coated G2 Evans on the batter side - sounds good. Here it is with my little Champagne Sparkle kit today.
