Gretsch Progressive Jazz Snare

Loading...

A few years ago I picked up a Progressive Jazz snare drum that I thought was covered in a very dirty white satin flame wrap. I was later informed by "those in the know" that the company never offered white satin flame and that mine was apparently a silver satin flame. Either way, it's got the usual scrapes, scratches and scuffs that all the satin flame wraps pick up quite easily plus a significant amount of dirt and grime in several areas. I discovered that at one time the company offered a peacock sparkle wrap and was wondering whether it's still available anywhere? I've been considering having this drum re-wrapped and if I do so the peacock sparkle would be my first choice. I'd also like to hear from anyone who might have removed a wrap from a vintage Gretsch snare. My experience has been that the level of difficulty seems to vary greatly among the respective manufacturers. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. When all is said and done I just might decide to keep the drum "as is", but I'm simply looking into all my options here. THANKS in advance for your time and your help! BTW.... If any of you Gretsch experts out there have any idea of the current market value of a Progressive Jazz model these days I'd love to hear from you. At this point I'm not sure if this one is going to be a "keeper" or if I'm gong to move it in the near future. I don't see a lot of these being sold so I haven't been able to obtain a reliable estimate as of yet.

You might take some flack here from the RB police about recovering that beauty.

I believe silver satin flame is a relatively rare wrap, especially on a 14x4.

The wrap appears to be in good shape all around; the hoops and lugs look great... even the key is still there!

I bought mine new in 1963 with the more common WMP. I don't play it much anymore, but I wouldn't part with it for less than $800, which would be an upper-mid range valuation, based on what I've seen 6 ply 14x4s with no issues selling for recently.

I'm not an expert on vintage drums. I'm still learning, but that drum is in very good to excellent condition. All of the parts are there too. The muffler metal doesn't have any rust either.

It's your drum, but .... I would not change a thing. Removing the wrap will lower the value of the drum. Yes, the wrap is faded, but that's part of the drums character now.

Take a bunch of pictures and clean it up. Based on the condition, I am guessing the lugs are not that dirty. Leave them on and clean them with Flitz metal cleaner. Clean anything metal with Flitz. A lot of members use Novus polish/wax and this drum looks worthy. Don't repaint the inside either. Leave the Gretsch silver paint "as is" and don't remove the tag. Get some nice new "vintage" heads to finish it off.

You have a beautiful looking drum that many members would love to own. Clean it and play it.

Thanks for posting.

royal ace: Appreciate your input!

thornbeck: Appreciate your time and your comments!

vintagemore2000: That "moonglow" satin flame looks much darker than what's on my drum. Nevertheless, based on the feedback thus far, I'll more than likely keep the drum in its original state. The question now becomes should I keep it or move it.

does match up with any kit you have or would it be a nice piece on your snare display? You could hook up with the ebay kit :)

That snare is pushing $600-$800 at auction as is. Re-wrapped, $350. if that.

You're in position to enjoy the money or the snare.

kellyj: This drum's currently included with some of my other snares in the vintage drum display I've got running at the local community center. However the display is scheduled to be taken down in the near future and I guess I'll have to decide at that time whether to keep it or go for "door #2" and the cash! I appreciate your input, BTW. Thanks!

Vintage drum display....

That's very cool and great for the community. How many/which drums do you have on display. Any pics of your set-up?
