Grestch Floor Tom Leg Mounts Last viewed: 12 minutes ago

I have a Gretch set that I'd always thought was from the 70s, didn't think of it too much, and just played the crap out of these things. My dad is a lot bigger into vintage drums and got to looking at them, and he thinks they're from the 60s because of the badges. I looked it up and it does look like the set is from the 60s, one tom was added and has a 70s badge. Only the 70s tom has a model and serial # (4420W 63496).

What really threw him off was the floor tom leg mounts. Were these common, or is there anyone that can give some insight into these? He has never seen any quite like this before.

These are some general pics of the drums if anyone has any info to share! Would love to hear it!

Here's the 70s tom that I believe was added to the set:

Double-flange hoops and "Gladstone"tom leg mounts are usually indicative of 50's vintage, but maybe thay could be ordered that way-

thanks for the info. not a lot of info around, but we're thinking these may be late 50s.

My guess for the Gretsch Round badge drums would be very late 50's to very early 60's. Gladstone style floor tom legs, silver sealer shell paint, no tags, stick-chopper hoops, old style bass drum T-handles and it looks like the bass drum might be 3-ply. If you take off the non-original bass drum mount, you might find mounting holes for the original cymbal arm mount.

Here are some links to Gretsch catalogs.

What are the sizes? Do you think the shells used to have wrap? A lot of potential with this kit.

I count three plies, with those leg mounts, I'm thinking late 50's. Looks like there is a sign of old adhesive (dark colors in the wood grain) under the finish, so this was a wrapped set at one point, sanded and polyurethaned.

Also, the grommet from inside the base drum shows signs of being gouged out. The new grommet doesn't stick down through to the interior.

Gladstone brackets are early 50's.....

As are the rims/3 ply shells....

I would guess around 1954...as it has Silver sealer inside.....first year they did that...AFAIK..........
