Floor Tom Conversion Last viewed: 36 minutes ago

hey guys! long time no see! ;)

so i'm thinking about taking a 1960's 18x18 Ludwig floor tom i found and turning it into a bass drum.

i've never embarked on such an adventure before..therefore i have some questions.

1. are the spacing of their floor tom lugs the same as there bass drum?

2. can i use the floor tom leg brackets to mount the bass drum spurs?

3. if i have to drill is there anything specific i should be doing/not be doing?

i figured one of you guys has prob done this before..considering jungle/bop kits are the cats meow these days..DOH

As far as using the leg mounts, that is exactly how it's done. You will need a riser at the front, seen here: http://www.interstatemusic.com/34738-Trick-16-And-quot-And-amp-18-And-quot-Bass-Drum-Riser-BDL1618.aspx

I searched all the others and no one is selling this model anymore.

If you want wood hoops, save a little jack and go to Aitwood, here:

Good luck with it!

Yes... don't drill. You don't want to add holes to an unmolested vintage drum.

here's some pics of a little kit i've cobbled together from bits n bobs i had knocking about in the attic. my boy asked if i'd teach him the drums, so i thought i'd see if i could make him a "mini" kit, that looks like a "proper" kit.

nothing vintage i'm afraid, but, i was reading this months rhythm mag, and in it, was a little tip on how to convert your floor tom into a bass drum.

i gave it a go and it came out good. good enough for Zakk to have a go on anyway, and it didn't cost anything.

so, here's the pics, hope they're of some use.

I currently have an 18", fiberglass, Pearl floor tom that I'm planning to do the same thing with, though I have taken a stab at it once before a while back. I had an old Tama Imperial Star kit that had a 24" kick drum that I didn't care for, but it had an 18" floor tom that I decided to try a conversion on. I did break the cardinal rule I must admit, but was very careful, and only drilled, (sorry) two small holes to attach a fourth floor tom mount. This enabled me to use the original floor tom legs as pseudo spurs and it actually worked out great - could still use as floor tom without having huge honkin' spurs attached. What I've been working on for the Pearl, is to use the existing floor tom mounts, and fashioning custom spurs from simple metal rods available at the hardware store which I've cut to size and carefully bent and mounted similar to the Ludwig one pictured. Actually inquired using jonnistix' link about purchasing hoops, but as I am in Canada, the shipping made it uneconomical, so I'm still sourcing those out. Project still in the works, but I've attached a pic of my Tama conversion.

I like how you made the FT legs work on the Tama "bass drum." I haven't seen that done before. Nice kit, by the way.

I'm no guru, just a vintage drum junkie!

@SlingerLynn; Thanks. When I'd gigged it I also used a hoop mounted floor anchor for extra stability - it worked great.

tama looks great!

finish is wild! Cool1

that's another thing i don't get..

18" bass drums do not NEED risers..why do so many people use them/insist on having them?

i've played 18's fine without them.

Hmmmm
