Finally scored a kit with a 18'' bass drum!

Not exactly vintage but 20 years old, a mid 90's Ludwig Classic kit.

Also somewhat weird sizes, maybe not for the era but just weird to me.

Kick is 18 x 16, so just a factory made floor tom drilled for kick legs and center tom mount at the factory.

Unfortunately mid power tom depths but not the end of the world since the kick is just a 18'', they can still sit very low. 10 x 9 and a 12 x 11.

The 10'' rack had not been drilled for a tom mount so the guy I got it from was using some jenky non fitting RIMS mount, off that and straight to a small kid sized snare stand it goes until I add a mount.

The seller also lost the tom post mount, but I don't really play a 5 pc so no biggie but now I have a 12 x 10 extra tom that will probably go up for sale somewhere.

Really the best part is the 14 x 14 floor, I loves me a 14 x 14.

Just a players kit as he knicked the finish up pretty good and he was the original owner. He also took a chunk out of the bass drum hoop to adapt a lame drum riser.

These shells sound so good too! And I haven't even put the proper coated Diplomats on yet!

On a side note, it was kind of a day for Ludwigs as I also picked up a Ludwig & Ludwig 18 x 12 marcher from shopgoodwill. Was really hoping for a 18 x 14 on this one but it's still cool and has 1 intact original calfskin playable head, the other side is cracked. Shell is 100% awesome, no damage and the original paint is very nice too!

Very Nice Indeed!

Nothing wrong with a USA made Ludwig kit!

Just so you know, Precision Drum Company does excellent work at cutting down the depths of shells. I bought a nice "Pulse" branded kit awhile back for cheap. Pulse was Musicians' Friend house brand, but the shells are very well made, with a natural lacquer finish and factory suspension mounts on the toms (virgins). They were power sizes, and I had them take 2.5" inches off the depth of each tom. They also re-drilled the lug holes for me (had to be shifted down, of course) and did the bearing edge that they cut. Pretty reasonable too. If you cover the original lug holes with wood filler or something, you could stain it or even use a furniture marker to color it in. Most likely, you will barely be able to see it, between where the head lies and the top of the newly spaced lug (tension rod helps hide it too). Also, depending on how much depth you get cut off, one or both of the original lug holes may get cut off too, so that's one (or two) less thing(s) to fill in. On my cut downs, of the original lug holes (they are two hole lugs) the original top hole was cut off, so I only filled in the original bottom hole. It is barely visible now, just under the head, and like I said the tension rods helps hide it too. You would never notice it unless you were absolutely looking for it.

I am very pleased with the results, and I like the toms so much better now! I think it's something you should consider. Gives you the sizes you want and Precision does perfect work, just like it was done at the factory. They charge $10 per cut, and $3 per two hole lug drilling. Not a bad price for a "new" drum!

Congrats on that marching bass too. What a display/collectible piece!
