Fibes snare drum Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

Hello, I have a few snare drums sitting around, I like to grab different drums and head to the gig just to experiment.... The other day I bought a 70's Fibes snare drum,it had a chrome finish that was shot, it has a Yamaha throw (no extra holes were drilled to put it on) the butt plate was changed (two holes were drilled) I'm sure the original throw was the sft. Anyhow I paid $40.00 and bought it home, I stripped the finish off (before you cuss me out... trust me it was trashed! so calm down! or I'll bring drunk chicks to your gig with cowbells and tambourines!)('o') Anywho the metal wrap came off very easy exposing the fiberglass that looks really cool. So put it back together and I put new Remo heads top and bottom, tuned it up, and smacked it! HOLY MOTHER OF BUDDY RICH!!! this drum is amazing! This is by far the loudest drum I have ever played. I played some rolls and every note at soft to loud came out with articulation. (no wonder Buddy loved these) So anyway I have decided to put a cool finish on it and maybe some cool tube lugs. If I change the lugs I'll pop the original ones on here or ebay ( they have a few pits but still are shinny and work great) If anyone has any ideas about this drum let me know. Thanks.

I have one I really treasure- I don't find it any louder than other snare drums but I love the complexity between it's attack and the aftertone. Also, it's got a really crisp response.

If you`ve ripped off the chrome outer shell you may as well do anything you like now- there are an ocean of nice wraps out there for you to choose from . I suggest a mirror wrap- that atleast will keep you in the ball park for the original idea. When you took off the chrome did you save the badge? Best of luck on it.

Yup, I saved the badge, it's more like a sticker, it's just like yours. (the sticker that is) I would always try to leave the finish on an old drum.. but this one looked like someone peeled half of it off already, and it would be easy to slice your finger open on it. If it had been all there I would have tried to buff it out I was just thinking... Maybe the 2 pounds of steel wrap that I pulled off of it was killing the drum a little and now it's louder.. who knows. I'll be hunting for another one in good shape now. Your drum is great looking! thanks for the advice.

These are great snares, I've got one like Oskabops.

Now that the wrap is off, I'd gentley sand down the shell to make it smooth & leave it.

Clean & polish the lugs and put them back on, tube lugs are way too generic when they were'nt there in the first place.

Sounds like the throw & butt are doing just fine to your ear, keep them too, after cleaning & polishing ;)

And you got yourself a keeper.
