Early 60's Ludwig Piccolo Last viewed: 2 hours ago

I felt compelled to share this drum that I just cleaned up and repaired. It's a Keystone, pre-serial # badge which I believe to be from 1960 to 1963?? About 15 years ago I purchased a cheap used ($200.00) drumset from a friend in high school and this snare came with it. It was missing the snare strainer, so at the time, it was placed in the closet and basically forgotten about since.

Anyhow, I recently decided to repair it and clean it up, so here it is!! I will post more pics of it when i get a chance.

It sounds great!! It is a 4X13. I normally dont like piccolo snares but this one suprised me!

Any comments on the drum are appreciated. I would like to know value (not interested in selling it), if any of you have seen a similar drum, etc.

Thanks, Justin The Band

beautiful drum. if it is indeed a 4x13 shell, then it would be a las vegas model from the very early 60's. sure don't see them very often. i can't tell by the pic whether it is black oyster pearl or oyster blue pearl. both are highly desired. the black usually brings in more coin(ringo). as far as value, i'll let the others chime in. great drum!

Thanks for the reply Mike!

It is Blue Oyster Pearl, so not the "Ringo" model. I just got it back together last weekend and love the sound of it. It's a warm "pop" instead of that paper thin sound that seems to come out of a steel piccolo. Ill have to look into the "vegas" models as I dont know too much about those. Thanks!

Yep, those are great drums. I've always liked the sound the wood piccolo snares have -vs- metal.

Besides that, those are kinda rare... not like sell it and buy a car rare, but scarce all the same.

Correction on the size. It is a 3x13, not 4" deep.

Then it's called a "Jazz Combo"

Thanks O-lugs! I am really enjoying this snare. It's a fun little guy to play on. I wish I could come across a kit to match it, that would be great!

it looked more like the jazz combo. that why i mentioned the shell size. those are still very, very desirable and uncommon. don't see as many of these as you do the 4x14 downbeats. i dont recall the last time ive seen a oyster blue jazz combo. great drum!
