Duplex Metal Snare Drum. What is this thing? Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hey guys, been a while since I posted. I got my Ludwig Black Beauty 1 year ago today. I went back to the same antique festival today and walked out with this.

I didn't get it for $45 like the BB. I tried talking them down to $50 from $175 and landed at $75 with the case and everything. I actually got it mainly to have an old case for the BB. I thought the cloth interior was pretty neat.

Anyways how did I do? Who is Duplex? I've NEVER heard of them before (Not that it means anything). Is it even worth what I paid? Also as you can see the condition could be better. It is hard to tell how bad the rust is without cleaning it. I just wanted to ask you guys before I touch it. I didn't even know what the Ludwig was until I came here. I don't think this is rare but who knows.

So, if you could help me out for the 432nd time that would be great! :p

Cool. Your drum looks a whole lot like my nickel over brass Duplex snare, with the exception being the butt. Your butt is metal and my drum has a rubber piece that the wires thread through on the butt side. I'm guessing either mine is a budget version or might be slightly older than your drum? Mine is missing a lot of the original nickel plating which reveals the brass underneath.

I knew when I took it apart for cleaning and polishing I was going to have a heck of a time getting the wires back on correctly. They're still not on right. If I keep the drum I may put modern wires on it. Can anyone recommend replacement wires that will work with these?

By the way, my drum is 4x14. No badge, just the stamping on the strainer. There is a vent hole. It was filthy with the original calf heads on it when I got it. I'm guessing this is a1920s drum, but I'm not sure about that.

Here are some before and after pics of my old Duplex.

Made in St. Louis. They had some cool looking stuff, like perforated shells.

Cool stuff. They seem like a smaller brand.

Anyone have ideas on the value of one of these oddballs? I am thinking about giving it as a present to someone.

You did very well. Is yours brass or copper plated? Would be interested in close up pics of the case. Need to make one for mine. Attached is my 30's "Aircraft" aluminum model. Hardware appears same.

Duplex made some very cool drums. Pricing is hard. Lot of times when they do show up auction ends early. Early cases are tough to find.

Modern style wires made by Duplex show up on eBaaa and work fine. Anyone wanting to part with original wires let me know.

Thanks,

Creighton

Hey, I have been busy lately. Reading threads but still busy :p

I will get some pics of it tomorrow as I will need to steal it from my dad. I somehow thought he'd be more excited to get it as a bday gift but I guess it isn't a Ludwig so he doesn't care :(

Shame cause I thought it was a real cool drum but hey..can't win them all.

That is a shame. Lots of Ludwigs very few Duplexs. If you want to sell it please let me know.

Thanks!
