drum muffling Last viewed: 3 days ago

Other than Richie Rings,Moon Gel.ectIs there a easy way to muffle my drums so I can use some heavier sticks?I started playing in another band that do not use amplification-except the singers mic. I don't want to step on the other players with loud snare and ride cymbal. I did try a hot rod stick with the round piece of rubber in the middle but want to try something else. Plus the Richie rings fly all over when using brushes

Just askin' Thanks M

Gaffers tape... that seems to be a solution people use.

Not a Guru... just interested..

A thin card wallet on the snare is great.

Fold some toilet roll paper under a strip of Gaffer (duck) tape.

Cottom wool balls inside the toms.

Tea towels or big dusters for a Ringo vibe.

Cut out entire heads from around the collar and place on top your existing heads on the drums. Makes a phat sound.

In an old post, Jon (Bermuda) Schwartz says that's an old studio drummers trick. I have to try it sometime just on his recommendation.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I have tried Jon's head trick and can vouch that it works... have used it at rehearsal and in a live miked situation...

Cheers

John

tape a sheet of paper accross the top( A studio trick) Yeah,ya gotta change it sooner or later unless you don't hit in the EXACT SPOT every time! (sorta like me?) This only controls ring.

Not moon gels, but cheaper and do pretty much the same thing - holiday decoration gels that folks stick on their windows. I got some on sale for a couple dollars after Christmas a couple years ago. Package with a bunch of letters spelling 'Merry Christmas', Santa, etc. Enough to dampen an Octoplus kit. Which I don't have, so these will last a while. Downside is they can leave a mark on the drum head if left for a long time, not an issue if you don't mind a snowman tattooed on your snare head.

I think the OP wanted to decrease volume. My understanding is that these suggestions would mostly decrease ring, not volume.

I use gels at 10:00 and 2:00 on my snare, and they do nothing to decrease the drum's volume.

One of the groups I play with is very, very quiet. I use either a pair of very heavy Vic Firth white brushes or I use wood tipped 2B sticks with a very light touch. The heavier brushes and sticks give me a fatter but not louder sound than lighter ones.
