Drum instruction book

Loading...

I'm not sure that this is the right sub-forum for this but here goes. I have the drum instruction book that I used when I first started taking lessons in the mid-60s. Over the years I lost many of the pages so my book starts at page 76. I don't have the cover and there are no copyrights or publisher marks on any of the pages. From the pages I have left it looks like it goes through all of the rudiments with a few pages of exercises and some charts to practice them. Below is a picture of the page on flams. Any idea what the book is? I figured that anyone who ever used it would remember the guy in a suit and tie playing a marching drum! Thanks in advance for any help identifying it.

You can find copies of several versions of this book on eBay, Reverb, and ABE books.  It is by Haskell W. Harr.  There are two books in this series and I am not sure, but I think this is book one.  I studied from it in the early 1960's and used it for teaching early on but don't have a copy anymore.  I think the copyright goes back to the 1930's and it was listed by Slingerland.  Mr. Harr was teaching at Vandercook college at one point.  I had the honor of seeing him at a PASIC convention many years ago.  He was in a wheelchair and was presented with a set of electronic drums at one of the exhibition booths.  We were amazed as he got funky on the electronic drums and thought maybe we should go back and practice from his books!   It is a classic series of books.  Good luck, Joe

The drummer sure looks like Don Osborne. He was Mel Torme's drummer. The drum in the pictures is a Slingerland with Sound King lugs so the pictures were taken late '54 or later as that's when the Sound King lugs were introduced.

Does this look like the book?

Thank you both for your help! Yes, what I have is the Haskell Harr Book 2. I had thought that I had lost the first 74 pages in the book but it turns out that book 2 starts on page 65 based on the picture of the table of contents that I found. I don't recall if I started with book 1 but from the dates in the book I have I was already playing for a few years so I may have. Now that I know what it is I'll buy a copy so I have the full book. Thanks again.
