Dont Shoot! I need to drill! Ludwig 12x15 For Club Date

Loading...

Hey guys,

So I found a silver sparkle 12x15 tenor tom to go with my 20/12 Club Date/Jazz Fest combo that I have laying around, and I wanna drill for the classic ludwig leg mounts. I have a drum foundry layout mat, which I assume should be correct for spacing, but I have a couple of questions for anyone who might own a 12x15 Clubby floor tom that is actually factory. I know that they used the cheaper leg mounts, but since this is a bastardization/something I am actually going to take out and play, I am going to use the higher quality era correct leg mounts that I already have. Here are the Qs:

1. Can you post a pic of the spacing of the front legs (the ones on either side of the badge). It appears that they should be a bit out to the sides...a little closer to the outside lugs rather than centered. I havent looked at the mat's suggestion yet, but I just wanted to see a pic so that I know it is correct.

2. Can you please tell me how high up the BOTTOM hole of the leg mount is off of the bottom bearing edge? I want them to be correct. Don't wanna guess.

This is gonna be a simple project, and it will complete my kit. Also it provides me with a vintage option unlike any other kit I own because I own no 15 inch floor toms, AND since this drum would never get used as a tenor tom anyway...I feel I am doing a service to the drum rather than wrecking it. I suppose if I wanted to avoid drilling I could buy a cradle, but I just don't like how those look with vintage drums.

Hope no one is mad.

Thanks,

Adam

You're gonna love your new floor tom, & save a bunch of dough skipping a 14x14. I don't have a factory one--made one myself, like you. Don't know the correct height, but you'll find, you can't evenly space them between 8 lugs, so it's gonna be a compromise. Wish I had a SS Clubdate kit.......marko

If you want better pix let me know.Good luck on your project,V

PS I hope is doesn't matter that the drum was RE-WRAPPED....

From the bearing edge to the center of the hole is 2 1/2".

You might want to hit up my buddy and fellow VDF, Stedi. He just came across the same situation with having to drill a 15x12 for legs for a CD project he was working on. Not sure what the outcome was, but as Marko mentioned...you can't make the spacing even.

I faced the same issue with my Clubbies: rather than scouring the earth for a 14x14, I bought a 12x15 marching snare and absolutely love the way it plays. You're going to enjoy yours.

I didn't have the heart to drill mine for legs, so I hung it from a cymbal stand using an ISS mount that I custom-drilled for an L-arm mounting bracket. It doesn't have that vintage look, but the ISS mount is much less visually obtrusive than a RIMS mount, and the floating mount makes this the most resonant "floor tom" I've ever played. Still, when I see a complete vintage Club Date, I get tempted to drill... :)
