Does this Look Legit? - Slingerland Single Ply Snare Last viewed: 16 hours ago

I bought this '63 Slingerland snare. It's in great condition, badge, lugs, rods, throw-off, hoops all look correct. It looks like a solid maple shell, but on the inside you can see a 'layer' - very thin but doesn't extend all the way to the re-rings. Also, the hole for the screw attaching the muffler is not lined up directly under the adjustment screw hole (maybe shoddy quality at the Niles plant -haha)?

Any opinions?

I believe what you fear is another inside ply is actually a little extra material on the ring that didn't get trimmed off. Mine looks the same way and I had to take a close look when I got it. I thought it was splitting.

Thanks!

Follow up question - What's the difference between a 'Radio King' solid shell snare and the 'Artist' model with solid shell? Some people refer to them as both ways. Difference in parts, shell, or sound?

TIA

Primarily the strainer, i.e. a three point strainer is what defines a single ply Radio King from a single ply Artist that came with the Zommatic strainer ( in the 60's BTW).

This along with the "strainer support brackets on both the strainer and butt end; these parts are the basis of the Radio King patent".......from Rob Cook's book FYI.

So.....long and short of it, 3 point strainer with Radio King bracket and single ply are the Radio King hallmarks.
