Does anyone here know and I am sure someone does .... what the sizes of Ian Paices drums were for the California Jam man that set looks huge looks like a 24x 16 bass drum 12x15 or 16 ride tom 16x18 and 18x20 floor toms... had not watched this in years always loved Ian in his Ludwig years ...

I think you are pretty much spot on with the sizes. That mounted tom was a 12"x16" I believe. 26" kick not sure if it was a 14" or a 16" deep. and the 18" and 20" Floor toms what a monster kit! By the way that Cal Jam Solo was Brilliant!

Sounds like he has all those huge tubs tuned to LPP! (Lowest Pitch Possible) Thunderous sounding kit! Takes a strong, power-house drummer to make those big drums sound so good.

Thanks for sharing that clip!

DA MAN!

One of my all-time fav's. I have most of their stuff from the beginning on vinyl, cassette, cd, mostly because of Ian's drumming but what a kick-a$$ band with some early very inventive covers, great writing and world class performers on their instruments. Personel changes hurt their fan base but I adapted and found the Deep Purple sound and feel was still there. IMHO, this is a rock band.

Thanks for the reminder. Going to put on "Book of Talisyn" And "In Rock". Maybe make it a Deep Purple night!

Cheers!

Indeed a world class band no matter who was in it their will never be another band like DP and I miss Jon Lord I saw their very first Concert in the states when they opened for Cream in their farewell tour I was blown away by DP I loved the original lineup I have been a fan ever since and i too have all their stuff on CD.....

ps Shuffleman I pretty much tune my big Ludwig set to LPP and I crank the reso's and lower the batters and you are right you have to hit hard and i have always been a very physical drummer even now at 62 i hit hard I am just slower.... lol

Mike - The reason I know about those is; one of the places my band used to gig regularly had a big John Bonham size kit as a backline set. It was tuned LPP and man did I have to lay into those suckers! I was playing with a Hendrix/SRV cover band at the time so I had a chance to get 'busy' on them. It was the most physical playing experience I ever had. I used to come off those sets sweating like Seabiscuit! Fun to play though. Deep sounding, thunderous kit. 14", 16", 18", 24". 1-up, 2-down. That kit is why I have so much respect for guys like Ian and JB, they really knew how to rock those big-drum kits. Big drums like that, you gotta hit em like you mean it, like they owe you money! LOL

LOL - For the first five or so years that I played, I always had some dried blood splatters on my floor tom from cut knuckles along the way. A cymbal got me once too! Went in at the wrong angle and open my finger right up. The edges on cymbals feel dull, but I promise you, they can cut too!

If there ain't a little blood on your drums, you're not really trying! LOL :p

Here's a bit of trivia for yas! :).In '72 Deep Purple came to Oz(Australia) for there 1st EVER 'down under" tour! :).They were to "headline" the famous(or infamous depending on your point of view), classic 'Aussie" rock concert:Sunbury. They wanted 10 TIMES! the usual headlining fee at the time($60K)!, ALL of the 'aussie " bands were ****ed off both with Purples fee&there aggressive attitude&behaviour of there road crew. They(Purple&there management) insisted on going on BEFORE AC/DC!,There was an 'altercation" (blue/fisti cuffs) between Angus Young&Ritchie Blackmore! :(.Now WHO do you think out the 2 who'd come up 2nd best in a fight between both of them?.This's a TRUE story! :), if ya wanna know more google:The La De Da's wiki &see the Kevin Borich "interview"recollection".The concert(minus i think Deep Purple) is available on both cd&dvd from Aztec music.com (or .com.au).
