Date/Discuss/ShowOff Vintage Gretsch Kit :) Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hey guys,

Just picked up a SSB Gretsch Kit today! Wanted to show off the badassery and also see if you could give me some more information about it.

The sizes are 24x14,13,14,18. The finish appears to be dark walnut. The bass has the batter muffler and the toms all have both side mufflers. From what I've looked up so far the "monster" tom mounts date it somewhere between 1977-1979...

The model and serial numbers are as follows:

24 - 4269w / 62701

13 - 4416w / 58712

14 - 4420w / 62742

18 - 4418w / 62813

Seems like this may not be a matched kit...? The 24 and 14 are pretty close but IDK enough about this sort of thing.

Sorry for the bad pictures. Any info / input you guys have is appreciated.

I bought them because they sound AMAZING, but it'd be nice to know if I got a good deal, too.

Peace

Good to have you here on the forum, the pics you posted are not of good enough quality to help you evaluate your kit. The drop G GRETSCH drums are awesome sounding drums.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Here are some clearer pictures, first of the badge and also of the monster tom mount I mentioned.

Glad to be here again - you guys helped me identify my vintage Luddy kit about 3 years ago :)

Well aside from the date range that you already figured out, I'm not much more help, all you gotta say is 70's stop sign badge Gretsch. Everyone will get the idea. I say the way you have them set up is best, the monster mounts are going to put that 13 and 14" in the sky. Rock that four piece!

W elcome to the world of Gretsch Walnuts! My kit's around the same age. I'd also like to hear what people think of these kits (for selfish reasons, of course).

W elcome to the forum.

Well mine aren't walnut but...

'81 SSB Drop "G" Grand Prix in Rosewood with Techware mounts

8x12" 9x13" 16x16" and 14x22"

Still need a 4160 or 4165.

Charlie Watts style:

These drums are thunderous, I can only imagine the sound of those 18" floortoms and 24" kicks.

DTM that is a really attractive kit. I bet it sounds great. I have never understood how it was that Gretsch made such great drums but their mounting hardware designs were always such rubbish. Could they not find one person that could do some engineering? I believe they finally gave up and just partnered with Gibralter. Good move on their part.

Bill, there it is again! I love it!

Yeah I know! The machine work on their Guitars is beautiful, yet the guys over at the drum plant are simply clueless. Mind you, they make up for it in the sound.
