Curry Custom Drums? Last viewed: 15 seconds ago

From bunnyman

I remember when Huey Lewis' drummer started a drum company in the late '80s or early '90s. Usually, there are small numbers and short runs. The value would be determined by what shape it's in, if anyone knows who this Curry guy is, and how much someone is willing to pay for it. In many cases, unless it is Craviotto quality, these boutique drums just don't bring in the Benjamins.

The drum company that Billy Gibson formed was the Select/Solid Snare Drum Company and his partner was none other than Johnny Craviotto.

It was eventually sold to D'Amico Drums who still sells them.(or they are at least still listed on their web site)

I love the combination of the single-point mount Ego lugs with the Millennium strainer. Great combination and look. The wood in the shell is to die for. I'd like to build a kit using those Ego lugs. Makes for a clean (small hardware footprint) modern look. Really nice work, man!John

Those are actually Trick lugs, you can order them directly from Trick & if you have a re-seller's license you can get a really nice discount depending on quantity. They also actually sell "factory seconds" (although I can't find a flaw) on their strainers, pedals, etc. at a very nice price!...I bought my first strainer & butt for $50 even before I submitted my re-seller info. Good folks & their stuff is top shelf!

Trick strainers are the BEST in the business, bar none!!!

If I had a player vintage that already had a few extra holes, I would not even HESITATE to install one, as it far exceeds the OEM strainer.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

I too am sorry to whiggins because I feel like I hi-jacked the thread...I apologize! I was trying to make a point about custom builders, many make the mistake of creating or rather, re-creating the same thing that the big boys sell...what's the point? If you're going to go out & buy run-of-the-mill Keller shells, slap a wrap on them, drill a few holes & strap up some stock "Chinese/Taiwan" manufactured hardware & call it a boutique...what's the point? Most fail because they are selling the same thing the big boys are for twice the price! My niche is to "make the shell the star of the show", I also try my best to use all USA manufactured hardware. That is the hardest part, stuff made in the U.S. is limited & higher in price, but the quality is much better. I'll ask some of the guys on GhostNote about Curry, I'm sure someone will know something.

Ego lugs are great, but they can be a little difficult to deal with & are pricey. A number of guys I know have waited 8 weeks for their orders to be filled & once gotten, have quality issues. I've never had any problems with them, but they have a little bit of a "rep" on builder sites. Here's an older build that uses their DE Single Point Round Lugs.

I agree...and I build boutique drums...one trip to GhostNote or any of the other builder sites will show you of what we speak. There are a handful of successful boutique builders...there are thousands of unsuccessful ones. I build for myself & a (very) small client base...this was a hobby until I lost my job, I am now actively working to expand my client base. I've been working with wood & restoring furniture since childhood, so all of my builds have natural hand rubbed finishes...for the most part Tung Oil. I also do not use Keller shells, other then their Vintage Mahogany's with re-rings. Got a guy in England that makes my Birch shells, got a good friend in Kentucky that makes my Stave shells (with milled in re-rings) and use VaughnCraft for solid steambent shells. Here's a couple links to recent snare builds & a Walnut Stave kit I'm building for myself.

I took a look at the VaughnCraft stuff and it looks nice!!!

If you ever feel tempted to try someone else for your shells, I suggest Pat Budnick of www.tcdrumshells.com. He built my Fremier (fake Premier) floor tom for my mongrel kit and I couldn't be happier. He does a few different things and is willing to work with you.

Thanks Bunny!...I looked at their stuff before, but had forgotten about them. They're a PBA member on GhostNote & really do top shelf shells. I have so many drums in progress right now, that I can't even think about buying anymore. I'm building a 9 piece Walnut Stave kit, 5 piece Keller practice kit, Bacota Stave Snare, 15" Slingy Hollywood Ace Tribute & a WMP Maple Dyna•Sonic Tribute...along with several old Slingy restorations, my plate is full for several months. I do need a VaughnCraft 24x14 & 13x9 Maple SB Shells for a RK Tribute kit, got the 16x16 & 14x7, but still fishing for the last 2 shells. Trying to build this without dealing with a certain person at VC that tried feeding me BS. So, just looking around the net to find them, if anyone out there has these laying around that wants to sell, PM me.

I had trouble navigating the Ghost Note site. Do you have to pay for access to other areas of the site?

Like I said- I LOOOOOOVE my TC Shells floor tom. It's a shame he doesn't steam bend shells...
