Correct snare wire for Jazz fest mid 60s Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hi

I am a bit out of the loop and am slowly getting back into it now that my boy is a bit grown (have built him a little boy's kit with mesh heads and taught him how to trad grip)....and am getting back to the recording biz, and concomitant drum gear search ....

My question , being new to this forum is this: What is the correct spec for jazz festival snare wires?

My snare is a mid 60's I think, 14X 5, eight tension casings, black oyster wrap, baseball bat muffler with red felt, P83s. I just have never paid attention to snare wires.....

Thanks in advance

black oyster jazzfest with red felt muffler?wow. you do know what thats worth right? great drum.

ludwig did not list the specific wires to specific drums in their catalog. i own two jazz festivals from that period. they have the chrome ludwig script logos wires on them instead of the clear plastic ended wires. mine have the 20 strand wires. i have also seen some with the 18 strand of the same type.

Yes I know of its historical value, had the rest of the Ringo kit but sold it before I moved, kept the snare though, it records very nicely, the jazz drummers usually ask to use it when I had an active commercial studio in the '90s.

My attitude to snare wires has been like drum heads, they are renewable or replaceable items. I've never given them much attention. right now I have some no name ones on them, or at least I don't recall what they are, can't even remember where I got the snare wire from.

Does anyone know which Puretone vintage set is the best match for a Jazz fest?

thanks in advance

They would likely be the P-1430 du jour, which were 18-strand chrome-plated with chrome butt plates that sported three holes. Some of my favorite snares ever.

The new P-1430's are made by Gibraltar and are 20-strand. There's a lot to be said for those old wires, and I don't think ANYONE makes 18-strand right now.

Canopus snares would probably be the closest sonic replacement. Of course, Puresound will work, but are definitely darker due to the lack of chrome-plating.
