I am a novice drummer with a beautiful late 50's Slingerland Kruppa kit with 13 and 16 inch toms. When I got the kit recently I installed coated amb batters and clear amb resos. The drums sound great but I would like to find some heads for the toms that are a little less resonant and ringy and maybe just a little thuddier?? What would the difference sound like if I switched these over to emp's? They are 3 ply shells if that matters? I also thought about maybe trying powerstrokes or something on there but I'm very open to suggestions.
Coated Ambassadors vs Coated Emperors? Last viewed: 3 days ago
Emporer heads are just a bit thicker than Ambassadors, if you want a muddier sound or more "thud" try using Pinstripes or any type of oil-filled head.
Check out a set of Acquarian Coated Response 2's
Its a coated 2 play head very similar to an Emperor but I feel they are a little thumpier.
Pinstripes are always an option but they always sound a little slappy/plasticy when you hit them to me. However I have only used clear ones, coated ones may remedy that sound. Clear heads do nothing for me in general.
Powerstrokes... great bass head not a fan of them on anything else

My favorite heads right now are the modern coated Vintage Emperors. IMO, they strike an excellent balance between tone, resonance, and heaviness.
I've been using coated Remo Ambassadors for years and every time I've tried something different I alWAYs go back to the coated Ambassadors. Except now I've been using medium Aquarian Modern Vintage heads and I don't think I'll ever go back. Very warm sound but without the muddy/thuddy sound of an Emperor and the coating lasts a long time as well compared to Remos.

I always go for the Emperors just because I want to be consistent with what is usually on the bottom heads and want to be "brand loyal" and all that silliness, but as much as I want to like the sound of the Remo's, I always go to the Evan's hydraulic heads to get that rock and roll thump that I love the "feel" of. I suggest that head choice is a little more complex than just buying new heads and hoping they flip your switch........some times I will even put on an old dented and dirty off brand head I have laying around and I'm surprised that it just feels good. Falling in love with your own sound is a large part of what makes a tune "groove". No love, no groove. New heads won't help you necessarily, try fallin in love with what you already have on those drums. Just a thought.
Happy New Year!
