Clear Vistalite heads-clear or black dot?

Loading...

I totally disassembled my clear Vistalite purchase over the weekend and am in the process of cleaning and polishing every piece of chrome that came with it (lugs, hoops, etc) while I await the eBay shipment of Novus to do the shells per my previous post.

It will probably take me a couple of weeks to get everything back together (I hate it when the day job gets in the way!). I am going to put new heads on them-what would you do-black dot or totally clear?

I have clears on mine. I use Evans clear G2's top, G1's on bottom. I think clear or dot works, I just prefer the sound of the G2's. I can get them nice and low, but they don't lose control.

I usually wind up peeling off the black dots. Clear heads are more open and much preferred when I use them.

I use Pinstripes on my clear Vistas, and sometimes add a moon gel on the toms, depending on the room.

How's the roundness and bearing edges on your Vista shells, by the way?

I've had Remo pinstripes and Ludwig silver dots on mine. I like the way they both sounded and looked.

Roundess and bearing edges are all in excellent order-I think the previous owner had these in storage for a while-the shells are mint, and when I got them they were in hard shell cases, with plastic bags around them, and then had a pillow on top of that-the guy took care of them....this is the first time I have ever taken a kit totally apart and it is teaching me patience and I cant wait until they are shined up and put back together....

I know this thread is a bit old but curious what you picked - I currently run clear Vintage Emperors on all the toms (and now on my newly acquired Vistalite snare) and love the sound.

Someone on Youtube also decided to try that exact combo:

Pinstripes over clear Diplomats are killin' it for me on my Slingerland Phantoms. That's how they arrived and I'm afraid to change because they sound so good (I would typically use a clear Ambassador batter, and that worked well for me during the brief period when I owned a Vistalite).

I've always wanted to use Diplomat resos but they are so hard to find at stores in the Bay Area these days! I currently run clear Ambassador resos with the clear Vintage Emperor batters.
