Clear Maple Interior Question

Loading...

Hey guys - I was wondering:

I've noticed on a couple of pictures that some luddy's with a white interior have been sanded down to look something like this:

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27082&d=1301001217

(lol except the light bulbs!!!)

notice how the wood looks a bit raw and unfinished?

Does anyone know how ludwig treated the "Clear Maple Interiors"??????

Did they use a finish? a stain? a varnish? what kind? was it polyurethane? how many coats? is this finish/varnish/stain still available?

Oh and also, a very similar question:

Does anyone know how ludwig actually did their Thermogloss finish?

If someone had a maple/poplar/maple drum, would it be possible to replicate/reproduce the "Thermogloss" finish with products and devices available to the general public?

Thanks guys!!!

Therm o gloss is just what it is called it is a sprayed clear lacquer that is applied heated and it was Ludwig's own special recipe, and yes you can replicate it. here is a pic of a 12x15 I did.

I had a Maple in three ply Lud,I would guess it was a varnish or a clear finish of some sort, it was fairly smooth, but not as hard as polyurethane IMO.

From my experience, the original maple interior (pre 1964; before they painted the drums white) which you mostly saw on bass drums, was unfinished maple. I'll bet that drum in that pic is a 1960-63ish drum.

I've got a 1941 Ludwig Junior bass drum and snare -both single-ply (solid), no re-rings, Thermogloss maple exterior, with unfinished interiors.

ok sweet.

Vintagemoore, would you be willing to divulge your "secret recipe" Cool Dude

and i wasn't aware of the interiors of kits in the very early 60's and before that. Has anyone else noticed though that the 70's kits with maple interiors look to have some kind of finish on them? they don't look raw like those pre-60's unfinished kits.

Does anyone know what that 68', 69', early 70's clear interior finish might be?

you can get test kits to tell u what lacquer it is from Mohawk/reliable refinishing co. elk grove village il and then buy it in quarts or shake can to respray.

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

ive got a pre serial 61 clubdate bass in galaxy sparkle. i was changing heads on it last weekend. i was admiring the maple interior as well. on mine, it is indeed just a raw finish on the maple.
