I'm just now looking into having the hoops re-chromed on my late 50's Gretsch kit. When I mentioned Die-Cast to the re-chroming foundry/factory owner that does a lot of chroming for automobiles he said 'you mean your hoops are made of Pot Metal?"
I said they're probably triple chromed. I don't know. He said triple chrome plating generally means what they have to do to get the chrome to stick to the metal. The process is copper, nickel (I don't know the order) and then chrome on top of that.
First....is this right? Are my die-cast hoops from the 50's "pot metal?"
Second... does anyone here have experience with having drum hoops....Gretsch Die-Cast and/or Stick-Chopper hoops.....re-chromed?
What should I be telling the re-chromer and what do I want exactly?
What would a resonable cost be....per hoop for instance. I think he quoted me $60/hoop and if I wanted Gold Plating it would be 1/2 again ($90/hoop). Does that sound resonable?
