Brought something new home last night! Rogers Red Onyx Last viewed: 4 hours ago

So after looking at skapunkedge's score from GC's website last weekend, I found this Dayton era set online and had to have it. I contacted the store and asked all the questions I could think of and we agreed on a price. These showed up at my local store in St.louis and I picked them up last night. 12,13,16,22 in very good condition with double tom mount. Also included were a swan leg straight stand, swan leg Sta-tite? stand, a Ludwig Spur-lok stand, Swivo BD pedal and a very cool set of 15" Italian hi-hats! Throne and extra 14" cymbal as well, but are junk.

I was very relieved to find everything in even better condition than I expected from the many photos that they emailed me! These are going to look practically brand new after a good clean and polish. The bass drum hoops are both cracked on their seams, but that should be an easy fix with a few dowels and some glue.

I am wondering, in the Dayton era what would a set in this size configuration have been called?

This is my second 60's Rogers set with a 22" and I can't wait to hear them!

I definitely didn't get a bargain, but I think it was fair for what I got and I'm very happy!

Superb! I was hoping someone on the forum would go for those. I was sorely tempted, but I have a 22,13,16 already and couldn't justify it. The look good, and you won't even need the dowels to repair the hoops. Very carefully lift the tacks or staples holding the inlay in place and slowly remove it from the hoop. Get the hoop slice clean as can be, and reglue that seam with a really first rate wood glue. Give it all the time it needs to mend and it should be fine. Reinstall inlays and careful secure again. I've had that same problem before and it is not a biggie. You could also look for two solid hoops on the dreaded Bay and put your inlays in them if the glue job becomes a problem.

Let us know how they sound and give us some pic of the whole business set up.

PS - It's a Londoner kit with upgrade to 22" bass. Catalog set had 20" bass. Might have been $10 or $20 more for the upgrade.

Very nice!! Word of caution guys; I bought a blue onyx kit site unseen and from word of mouth from the GC store. When the kit showed up:

1. Tone controls missing

2. Plastic bass drum hoops

3. Collets missing

4. Greater amount of cracking in the floor tom wrap vs. described.

I returned it to the Raleigh GC the next day and they refunded me 100% and shipping also. The GC in Michigan offered no recourse. So be careful and I would only buy through GC via a friend who will call and get past the salesman pitch plus get more pictures.

You have a nice kit there and fair price.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I am super excited about these! Out of all my kits, I think this is my favorite finish right now. Thanks Dan for the advice and info. So, a 22" Londoner kit? COOL! What is everyones suggestion for a high quality, easily obtainable wood glue?

Manny,

I know what you mean about unpleasant surprises when receiving drums sight unseen. I called around and talked to the same person around six times before pulling the trigger and he was very understanding and also sent me around two dozen very nice up-close photos via email.

All in all, a surprisingly good experience!

Those are awesome! I love the red onyx!!! GC is a bit hit and miss mainly because you end up speaking to someone who really has no idea what to look for. The service has been pretty good in my experience. Have to ask a lot of questions and ask for a bunch of pictures. I prefer stores that are more mom and pop but if mom and pop don't have what I am looking for then GC has not been all that bad to me. Plus the do offer the 30 money back that you would be hard pressed to get from an Ebayer.
