Bought a Round Badge Gretsch Dbl Bass Kit - What to DO?

Loading...

I bought a round badge Gretsch kit in aqua satin flame yesterday, with 60's Avedis cymbals for a grand. It's a 6-pc, 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, 5x14 matching snare and two 14x20 kick drums. It's disassembled currently, waiting to be cleaned, and I'll post pictures later.

Condition is typical, lots of spiderwebbing and scuffs and a few missing parts but all in all it's in totally workable shape and needs no drastic surgery. No new holes, yes!

However, due to the configuration, I'm having trouble deciding what to do with it. The kick drums aren't identical, they are a left side and right side pair, that is, the rail mount is on the right side on one drum and on the left side on the other drum, and there is a cymbal arm bracket on only one drum. This tells me these drums were all purchased together, as a Louis Bellson style kit or something. I can't actually find any similar ones on eBay or even through Google.

That's cool and all but I don't play double kick. In fact, if I keep these I'll have no use for the 13" tom either, as I play a 4pc exclusively and don't see that changing. So my questions to you experts are:

1. How rare is this second kick drum with the rail mount on the right side? How rare were double bass Gretsch kits in the 60's?

2. Assuming I'll sell these, am I shortchanging myself by selling the second kick drum (and possibly the 13" tom) separately? The second kick drum needs a full set of rods and claws, and both new rims and heads. Not cheap, but cheaper if I'm not so concerned about these parts being era-correct Gretsch.

3. Assuming I keep it, am I being an idiot if I get rid of the second bass drum and 13" tom?

Thanks for any perspective you guys might have. I'll post some pics of the shells soon, but I won't be taking pro pictures til eveything is really cleaned up, which will take a few weeks.

The 2 drums you are going to sale off would not be a big profit margin to break up the kit, just keep them an down the road sale it all together, I bought a double bass Slingerland kit a few months ago, I don't play double bass either, but I am going to give it a try it maybe a new thing I like, but I am not going to sale off the drum I don't use I'll just case them away. hope this helps some!?

Here's another question, I guess: how rare and valuable would this left side kick drum be? It would be a great drum for a lefty player, or for someone to add to their aqua satin flame kit, or re-wrap and add to whatever round badge kit as a second kick. I can't imagine there are very many of these with that hardware orientation in existence. And it's all original from the factory, no new holes and no added hardware.

Think I have seen TWO RB double bass kits IN PERSON in around 45 years....if that tells you anything...

First one was in around 1968-9 at a local music store.....Middletons Music at 1445 Plainfield Ave N.E...........brand new! Champagne Sparkle....right out of the catalog....

Bought my fist A.Zil out of this store....12" Splash....I recall paying $12...so $1 per inch...

Last Gretsch Double bass kit one was in around 1971-72....Riverside Park......,G.R.Mich....

Used to have lots of concerts there for free...and I recall a guy playing a DB Gretsch...he had toms BEHIND him also I recall! Rare bird!

Keep that kit together. It will be worth more in the long run. Restore what you plan on playing and the rest is money. You paid a great price for all that.

I'm going to agree with the others...please don't split up that kit! As mentioned, not only will it be worth more in the end, but it would be a shame to split up such a rare kit that left the factory that way and has been together for all of these decades.

OK, I'll take everyone's advice here and keep the kit together. We'll see if I fall in love with it or not, it'll be weeks before I get it cleaned and assembled. I have a strict two-kit policy for stuff I keep, and slot one is my pink lemonade sparkle Pearl President.

Either way, I'll definitely deliver photos later. And I'll take some quickies of the shells soon for this thread.

Here's what the shells look like. Grimy, they've been in an attic for years. The snare and the 12" have been cleaned in this pic.

I looked further at the stuff that came with this kit: a full set of 60's flat base Gretsch stuff, kick pedal, hat stand, two cymbal stands, snare stand and also a Rogers 395R. All this stuff is complete but most of the stands have been spray painted, believe it or not. So I have some work with paint stripper ahead of me...
