I bought this snare used for I believe $10 when I was in college, which was around 1992. It doesn't have a badge. I don't know the make. I also don't know the type of wood. I am really a guitar player first so this snare has been my only snare for years on end but when living in apartments, it went many years with no use at all.

Do you chaps know the make or the wood?

Thank You,

Lisa

I would say it`s from MIJ origin...The vertical grain in the wood tells me that it is luan - asian mahogany...The MIJ specialists will determine make, era, etc...

Cheers

Thank you for that info so far. It is fun to learn about this drum I have had for so long.

If I buy new Puresound snares for this wood model, should I get brass or steel? Any thoughts?

My guess is that this is a Pearl made drum. Could be wrong, though. The bottom hoop looks pretty hefty, could be aftermarket, like I suspect the strainer is.

I wouldn't go all out and spend the money on Puresound wires. A new set of cheap 20 strand wires will be all you need. Maybe if you really wanted to gussy this thing up you could go with the German made ones, but dont think it's neccessary. I mean, if you had an old Radio King or something really special you could justify spending the extra cash on the wires, but for an old import drum, it just doesn't make a lot of sense, and I dont think you would even hear that dramatic of a difference in sound. Please keep in mind that this is coming from someone who loves these old Japanese drums.

And, man! you gotta love that wrap! The drum looks like it's in really nice shape overall. Have fun getting it back up and playing. Post some more pics when it's all together, if you would.

Thank you cn679! I really appreciate your opinion and knowledge. I don't want to polish a gravel like it is a precious gem. Sounds like it is still worth the $10 I paid for it. ;) It is a good sounding snare and it is in nice shape so I will hold on to it and give it to a young musician who could use it someday.

When I bought this, all the guy said was that it was a German snare but it seems these lugs and throw off aren't distinctive enough to know what it is. Maybe it never even had a snare.

If you have more than one snare in the same diameter, and you plan on drumming for more than a few years, I have to say I see no harm in purchasing some Puresounds and throwing them on that puppy.

If it sounds good you are ahead. If it sounds like a dog, you have some Puresounds for another snare. You'll need them sooner or later.

Ditto heads.

I agree it looks MIJ. The snare throw looks a bit more robust than some.

Good point Patrick.

I just looked at some MIJ on Ebay and the lugs look a lot like the Apollo on there so I bet it is MIJ.
