My opinion is 1961 to 63

my 62's

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

LOL - I just posted a response to your remark about Ludwig 62's in the other thread. Now I see you started a separate one! Here's a copy of the response I posted (in the other thread:)

"You wrote: i love 1962 luddys. I think the best year for Ludwig, personally; but that's just my a opinion.

You're not alone in that opinion! My 62' SBP Hollywood kit sounds better than any of my other Luddy kits hands down. Came with a COB Super and I added a matching J-Fest. 62' was a -great- year for producing very high quality drums at Ludwig!

Too many great drums to list here!

I like the early 60's Ludwig's myself. Now I am thinking of taking these out next gig. Haven't in a while. Nickel lugs.

The seller bought the Bass drum and jazz fest in 1958 and added the toms in 60 and 62. He let someone borrow the jazz fest and never saw it again, or I would have got that too. Ohh well. He played them all those years and was tired of them so I swapped him a inexpensive new ddrum kit I got off CL for them.

Collectibles: 1920s-30s.

Players: no opinion although I hear the early 1960s were good sounding and I've heard modern day Ludwigs that sound great.

Clear maple interiors are my favorite Ludwig kits. I would have to vote 69-72 as the era with the best-sounding kits I've heard, with a special nod to 1970 because that's the date on my favorite Ludwig kit I own.

1970 Ludwig Downbeat
1965 Ludwig Hollywood
1970 Ludwig Jazzette

I dig early 60's Ludwigs and of course WFL drums. The quality of the WFL era drums were outstanding. The new legacy line is really neat also. My dream is still a Joe Morello style setup. Although honestly I will take any drums if I could play like Joe Morello!!!

I have a few Ludwig toms and snares - nothing to really compare them to in regards to a kit. However, my 67 Acrolite snare drum is a mighty fine drum and if the rest of the 67 drums held up to this snare drum I would vote 67. That 62 SBP kit of yours John looks beautiful.

I really can't pick. ive got a bit from lots of different periods. some complain about the quality during the ringo rush. ive got lots of that stuff and have had no problems with any of it. my transition badge kit sounds exceptionally well I think.

I like the clear maple interior three ply kits with rings best as well. They just have such a nice full, deep sound. They also had those cool mod orange, citrus mid finishes available during this time period. I know there is some overlap on these finishes but these are the shells I think of when I think of the mod finishes.

The three ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany with the white resocoat interiors are really nice if you can find a good example.
