Bass Drum muffles and No Badges

Loading...

All,

I've been poking around the blog for a while now and have learned some really neat stuff about a number of different drums, but a set that I have still has me a bit puzzled. It's a 1959 Slingerland, just bass drum and tom, but the tom has no badge on it. I'm virtually certain that its original and genuine because it was given to me by the original owner, the physical characteristics of the drums match, and all the stamps on the inside match. Did they ever produce toms for a set without a badge? It seems a bit weird, but everything else matches so I have no other reason to doubt it. Also, the bass drum has muffles on it much like the tom, but most Slingerland sets I see from this period don't have them. Were these a custom option or could the set be a custom ordered makeup? I'd love any insight on these.

Thanks!

Hey Jazzy - this is very common for that era. Slingerland would place a badge on the bass drum only and the toms went badgeless with just the gromet at the air hole. If it all looks right and seems like it wasn't messed with, then you can rest assured that it's original. I can't comment on the mufflers on the bass drum, so I'll let the Slingy experts chime in on that one. Enjoy your drums!
