Barclay Drum Set Last viewed: 21 hours ago

Loading...

My Dad purchased a set of drums somewhere around 1970. The badges reads Barclay on them and I wanted to try and locate some information as well as possibly finding another tom.

Anybody have any insight ?

Welcome!

The Barclay drums I see reference to are what are called "Stencil kits". These were drums made in Japan to model the style (hence the term stencil) of popular American Drums.

These stencil drums seem to vary somewhat in quality but are most often characterized by the luan plywood used in the making of the drum shells. This is easily identified by taking a head off any drum and noticing that the wood grain runs vertically in the drum top to bottom rather than around the drum which was typical of wood used in American made drums.

The Stencil kits had some very cool wraps and were made under hundreds of different names... http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/japanese_drums/badges.html

Finding a match to your kit might be tough... there are lots of vintage MIJ stencil kits around but finding a matching Barclay might be a challenge.

There are many fans of vintage MIJ drums and the higher quality drums can certainly be tuned to provide a satisfactory experience. The lower quality drums are pretty much junk.

That's what I got.

Looks like Barclay was big into making guitars as well... seem to be more of those around than Barclay drums.

Not a Guru... just interested..
