Badfinger

No, not the band, I'm talking about the one you use when someone cuts you off on the freeway....ya, that badfinger. Anyway, the one on my left hand is giving me fits, when I bend the finger, it feels like bones are rubbing together and it gets locked. I can't play matched grip anymore because I can't hold the stick without it causing pain, so I've been practicing with strictly tradtional grip. Has anyone else had a problem like this, any remedies? Thanks.

I haven't had this problem but would recommend someone who specializes in trigger point muscle therapy. Your local chiropractor may do it or recommend someone who does. Or Google it. Also I take this awesome yummy powder supplement HA Plus from Nutritional Frontiers www.nutritionalfrontiers.com since I run a ton of miles per week and need all the help I can get. I'd steer clear of perscription drugs or anyone pushing surgery.

Good luck JR. I love Badfinger though! No matter what.

Sounds to me like tendonitis or related inflammatory condition of the connecting tissues. Resting the area combined with icing it down (don't apply heat) are likely to be the best remedy. I've experienced similar issues over the years; almost always the result of overuse, misuse, and stress. Sometimes it's as simple a matter as prolonged lack of sleep. Could easily be the result of your day job or some activity completely unrelated to drumming - something like carpentry/shop work, typing on a keyboard, or even entering a vivid dream state every night where you are dreaming of driving down the highway like a bat out of hell flashing the finger to everyone in sight! :)

Repetitive motion and stress related injury often takes weeks or even months of rest and attention, but most all of them will heal themselves over time. Over the counter aspirin or ibuprofen can reduce inflammation if you can tolerate them well. You may have to immobilize the limb or appendage sometimes to allow for complete rest. No medical advice intended in this reply, of course. If you feel that professional medical help is the answer by all means seek it.

*p.s. - I once experienced a similar inflammation. After narrowing down the possible causes it became apparent that switching my snare batter to a heavy kevlar material was causing shockwaves to travel up my wrist and lower arm.

It could be lots of things, that can be relieved with a holistic or chiropratic approach, but you won't really know till it's x-rayed.

None of us here are doctors, and even if there was one here,if they were any good, they certainly wouldn't diagnose you on an internet forum, without a hands on one to one physical examination.

Do yourself a favor and at least, get x-rayed and get to a chiropractor,or a sports medicine therapist or an orthopedic MD.Leave the guess work to TV weather men.
