Anyone else have a custom bass drum reso? Last viewed: 3 days ago

Hey guys! I figured I'd share my new bass drum reso! I needed something unique and striking for my festival appearance and decided to use a local tattoo artist bribed with a case of beer to do some sharpie art for me!

He went off of this picture:

And made this:

Anyone else have a skin they'd like to share? Let's see them!

I no longer have these drums and it's difficult to see, but I put my signature on the front head in tribute to Bun E. Carlos.

I made a bed of masking tape, did a large signature with magic marker, then used an x-acto knife to cut away the extra tape. Then I went over the signature a few more times with the marker to thicken it. If looked funky up close, but totally pro from a distance.

The guitarist in the first photo was also a huge Cheap Trick fan and freaked out when he first saw it.

Not sure if this qualifies but this is my custom bass reso head. Its an old t-shirt glued to a reso that has a circle cut out behind joe cool. I did this myself.

Slingerland. 14-15-18-24. The 14 and 15 were originally concert toms mounted on stands with 13- and 16-inch concert toms that I stopped using. I added bottom rims and a Tama post.

That's pretty inventive man, see the reason I joined this forum was to find out more about the vintage drum history. I would've never have guessed that from just looking. What kind of shells are those? Mahogany? And do those have round bearing edges? And why did you go with such large tom sizes, was that a preference thing or do you find the larger sizes have more character?

That looks amazing! I can't believe how smooth the tie dye looks on that set. Wicked cool!

I have always wanted a tie dye kit. I never could find one, trust me, i searched. So i decided i would do my own, and i did. The tie dye is actually cloth, cotton twill, the same material carharts are made from. I love my tie dyes, they are very cool and sound pretty darn good. Im glad you like them. Thank you for your nice comment.

I'm pretty sure they're maple shells with whatever bearing edge Slingerland was using in 1977. I do know that they were 3 plies with reinforcement rings.

The kit was originally 13-14-15-16 concert toms on stands with a double-headed 18" floor tom and a virgin 24" bass drum. I got it because it was the best available kit on the used market in Columbus, Ohio, in May 1977 (it was practically brand new and the seller gave me the receipt so that I could pick up the back-ordered throne and hi-hat). I was 15 and thought it was cool, but didn't give the logistics of that many large drums any thought.

And even after I joined my first band and only found myself needing three toms, I never thought about trading down to a smaller set. I just installed bottom heads on the 14 and 15 (they were already positioned over the bass drum on their stands) and mounted them on a Tama post (to eliminate two stands that didn't provide good mounting angles anyway).

I used these drums until 2001 when I finally realized that they were wrong for most of what I was doing.
