I just found this on eBay.....40s/50s Slingerland 3-Point Radio King Era Snare Drum Strainer. Is this it?
Any info on this drum? Last viewed: 5 days ago
I think I will keep it. Even though it's not a valuable drum...it is what it is. It's a piece of the 50s. I came across it by fluke. Yes. I would like to keep it as a snare. I don't want to monkey around with it. If I could get a retro-fit strainer without having to modify it(or very little modification) I'd be happy. I wouldn't mind getting the proper drum key to fit the holder, though. Could you point me in the right direction as to where I can find a replacement strainer and drum key?
How much are you asking for the butt end?
Drummer's Paradise was the first real drum shop that I knew of in Toronto. I was there many times in the 60's-------bought some cymbals there. Perhaps there was a Drummer's Paradise badge tacked above the Slingerland badge?
Tenor drums are actually a specific type of marching drum-----presumably some tomtoms were originally derived from them. Typically ,a tenor drum is bigger than a Parade or Marching snare and at one time was much deeper. Old paintings and illustrations show them , often as deep as a modern floor tom or 16 to 18" and often conical with a smaller bottom than top. There is at least one German maker of them still ----the deep ones and they are metal.
Thank you for that info, Calfskin. By the looks of the address, Drummer's Paradise was located in The Beaches.
The Beaches are way east of there(couple of miles)----kind of a chi chi lefty residential area.
There is a pawnshop district in Toronto, not too far from the then central shopping district on Yonge st. Drummer's Paradise was about 5 minutes walk from each. They introduced me to Ufip cymbals and that was just about the time they started rotocasting. I once had a Leedy Ludwig snare with the very same stamp in it.
I'm not sure when the store quit. The property became part of a hospital complex and then a store called Drum City showed up not too far away----I'm guessing it was the same management.
I must have read the address wrong. I thought it was Queen St. East. I know the area you are talking about. Church St./Queen St. area. There were a lot of cool pawn shops there. Richmond's Trading Post was my fav.
