Am I a Hoarder?! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

In about an hour, a gentleman is arriving to take a look at several of my old Stars (some other makes as well). Yesterday I answered an ad on Kijiji (a buy/sell site) by someone interested in buying all makes of vintage drums. I have an entire room stacked with drum sets, snares, marchers, bongos and all things related. It is time to downsize, at least in my girlfriend's opinion. The only trouble is that I wish I'd never contacted the gentleman. The money is not important. What is bothering me however, is the fact that I spent years collecting these instruments. I enjoyed every minute of restoring them and getting them back to as pristine a condition as possible. Damn! To me these old tubs mean more than a few dollars. Maybe I'm just a hoarder. Have any of you guys ever been put in a similar situation? What did you do? Thanks.

YES.

But hoarding is normal for drum restoration.

Every set I sell could be useful to me again, but I have to decide if a restoration is it's own reward. I recently sold a couple of collectible sets that I loved, but never played for various reasons. Decided that it was time for someone else to enjoy them, even if not played. Just be sure the guy would only flip them maybe instead of strip for parts.

When I see someone local playing a set I worked on, that makes me happy all over again.

I think hoarding is only an issue if you don't have the room for it. And it's not breaking your bank account. When drums are cramping your living space then it may be hoarding. But share the love of what you've done. Or give them to a relative who may be interesting in playing. BTW, can you take a photo of your hoard? :)

I think you are mate, but who cares. I too have way too many drums, but I do use them.

Yes - you are, but it's a good thing when it's drums and drum gear :)

You're doing fine.

Well, the day turned out to be quite a good experience after all. The gentleman who came to look at my collection was a very serious collector of Ludwigs, Slingerlands and Rogers. Very serious! Numerous kits. Dozens of snares! His stories concerning his treasures were really informative! This guy had rarities I've only heard of but, never seen. I think he was being respectful and polite to even take a look and interest in my old Stars. He bought an old Sabian splash cymbal but, I really had nothing else of interest for him. We certainly enjoyed the visit though. Just two drum guys talking about what they love! I still have my collection intact!

I think you guys are right. I am a hoarder. I'm sure that in the near future, I'll try again if I can find the right buyer.

Thanks for the input, guys!

Larryz, I wish I could post pictures but, I don't even own a camera. My computer skills are solely lacking. Thanks for the interest though.

Not a hoarder unless it severely impacts your lifestyle in a negative way..... this is my justification for the size of my collection

Brian, you are not a hoarder unless ( like already mentioned) it affects your income and sanitation of your home. If you can afford it and your house is clean and you have room then yur fine. Heck is Jay Leno a hoarder because he collects cars?

Glad to hear you still have your collection, keep it unless you really need the money.

And on a side note, thank you very much for your kind response to my gig video/drum solo, those types of responses are what keeps the confidence alive! Thank you buddy!

Thank you!

Thanks, kevins and thank YOU, Jeff for the encouraging words. Also, Jeff you deserve a lot of praise for your drum solo! It was really clean and effective. You didn't throw in superfluous beats just because you could.I thought you were great!

I never dated any girl that questioned me owning drums.
