Advice sought: calfskin heads, plus tom mount question Last viewed: 22 hours ago

Hi All,

You may remember me from such posts as "1950's era Ludwig Duco snare" purchase.

This snare looks to have a calfskin head on the bottom. Now, I'm a player not as much a collector, and I'm wondering whether I should change this head or not. I haven't really tried to tune it, as I'm slightly afraid of damaging it, and am wondering what you all would do - leave it on and keep it original, or sell off the calfskin head.

Admittedly, I haven't palyed the drum enough yet to tell you what I think it sounds like.

Secondly, I recently figured that if I bought a concert snare stand, I could get rid of all my RIMS mounted toms. I only gig with a 4-pc kit generally so this just dawned on me that one stand could solve a lot of tom mounting issues I have with my various kits, since I usually drag the same hardware around no matter which one I'm using..

My question is what snare/tom stand do you recommend? Height seems to be the biggest importance, and I know some companies make ones with smaller baskets, specifically for 12" toms.

I'm so over RIMS mounts. Extra hardware that just doesn't really make that much of a difference. And in a 4-pc setup, it's the only drum mounted that way, unless you have a floor tom basket too.

Thanks in advance for your input! ~ Jim

This website is a dangerous place to visit.

Just bought my 4th (5th?) Premier kit this past weekend - grey shimmer 20/12/16.

But this thread combined with a few other posts of mine make me think I am actually this guy:

sigh.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'd leave the calf head on. Loosen it up (don't remove), wipe it down with a damp clean rag (inside and out). let it dry a bit then tune it to your liking. Humidity will change it's pitch/tone but it's a sanre head and won't effect your playing. At some point try a calf head on the batter to see if you like it's feel and sound.

You can hang your tom off a cymbal stand, keeping the rims mount, so you won't have to buy more equipment. :) I'm sure you have assorted clamps in your trap you can use to make this work. I know I have tons more clamps than I really need. I keep them just in case.

I'm not thrilled at the look of a snare stand holding a tom, to me it looks unprofessional.
