80's vs 90's Recording Custom kits Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hey guys, maybe not completely vintage but still!

I have bought two sets: a 80's pre-yess recording custom set: 22*14,13*8,16*16 and a 90's yess 22*16,10*8,12*9,14*12 set.

Now I want to combine the two sets of course to make nice combinations like 10,13,16 :)

I must say I am starting to notice some difference in tone...does anyone know about this? I have the feeling the 80's kit sound warmer and fuller. I can really put it next to my 3-ply Ludwigs. This RC's sound just amazing, incredible!!!

Of course the difference can be in the heads (the 80's has coated and smooth white resonance heads the 90's clear amb). To my suprise the 13' tom without the yess sound very open and gets an incredible sound especially in lower tuning!!! I've always expected that the birch wood would make a good high sound....but the low tuning equalizes my Ludwigs!!!

Can someone give me any advise? Is there a difference? Someone have experience with that?

Thanks a lot :) Anyway I'm veeeeery happy with this drums!!! Together with my 3ply Ludwigs I can't be more happy....no wonder RC drums are legendary (only don't put pinstripes on them :p )

I had an early 80's 18/14/12 RC kit with the early bearing edges, which I understand YAMAHA changed at some point. I'd look there first. Totally agree with you about using Pinstripes on them, awful...

FYI

Never play it the same way once.
