'78 Ludwig Thermogloss help Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

I'm working on a '78 Thermogloss kit for a friend. The toms are in VG condition but the kick has issues.

1. The hoops are shot. Warped and chewed up by basement floors and kick pedals. I intend to replace them with new maple hoops of the same diameter and thickness. Is it possible to stain or otherwise finish the new hoops to match? Or at least closely resemble?

2. The reso tom rims have dinged up the top of the kick pretty good. Is it possible to repair/re lacquer these spots or am I asking for trouble?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've read some great info on this forum. First time posting.

Thanks!

Paulie, nice to have you with us. I would say take a tom and the new hoop to a Sherwin Williams paint store or equivalent (not a big box store) and have them match some stain to the tom. If you can get your hands on some raw maple wood for them to do the match with then that would be ideal. They can tell you what finish to use over the stain. As far as the repairs go, that's a different story. To do it right the entire drum needs to be stripped and re-finished. A touch up will look bad. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions. Take pictures and post them for us please.

Thank you!

Thank you JC. I will take it to my neighborhood paint store. Test it out on some scrap first.

I saw a cabinet maker using a lacquer restoring process here [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYQnVauKs2Y&sns=em"]Woodman's Lacquer Restore - Dennis Woodman - YouTube[/ame]

And I guess I had hope for the dings.

The only problem with hope is that, sometimes, it's unfounded.

Well that product looks like it would restore the finish but wont do anything for scratches below the finish. It would be a band-aid fix thats all. But I am they type that wont fool around, I would remove the original finish and start over. Not saying it wont work, heck, try it out and see. It might be enough to satisfy you

I recently had some stain matched, check out this thread,

http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=43601&page=2

It is ML Campbell stain custom matched to a drum like were talking about. I cant ship the stain to you, so try your paint store first.

Thank you!

finished a few months ago... thought i'd post a few. Pleased myself. Delighted "customer". Nice sounding kit. biggest challenges were matching the new unfinished kick rims to look vintage thermogloss...and not being able to fix the dents on the kick from the tom rims

Well done. My favourite Ludwig kit - I wish I owned it, the dings add character.
