68 Luddies crack by spur mount ...repairable?? Last viewed: 12 hours ago

Working on my latest project

Stumbled across a crack in the shell where the spur mount gos. I'm sure u guys seen this before

From the outside it looks as if where the mount gos is slightly pushed in . I know this can be glued and clamped. But my concern is will it be strong enough. Have any you had success with this type if repair

? Any opinions info greatly apreciated .

It looks like it was dropped, and the weak spot is on the outside. The impact probably caused the dry wood on the inside to split the grain from going outta round real quick and back.

If the damage was the other way around, you could do the repair and add a wood reinforceing plate. I don`t see removeing the wrap piece and filling the crush in as hard enough or resistant enough.

A while back a member did a Kieth Moon kit that had metal decorative plates on the outside for support around the spurs, Moon liked to stand on his kit once in a while and needed that. Maybe you could do something similar !!

On my first MIJ fit, the whole side near the spur mount caved in.

I cut a piece of 1/8" metal and made an inner backing plate that I bent to the approximate diameter size.

It covered the split and strengthened the side.

Bad side. Extra holes to hold the large plate.

If you made a small plate and used existing hole pattern it might do the job.

Kind of like a bigger backing plate than the profile of the bracket.

All on the inside.

If he don`t do anything about the outside, it wont sit flush/off angle and may wabble !!

I like this suggestion. From the pics it looks like you could put a good quality wood glue in the cracks (inside and outside), push, tap or clamp the shell back into as close to the original shape as you can get it then use the big backing plate (existing holes) to reinforce the fix.

I think the only way to do it would be plate on the top and the bottom but the plate on the top needs to be very thin

someone suggested a rubber gasket slightly over sized. I also found a later Ludwig stock gasket that will fit in between the mount and the outer shell.

i just wonder if a plate on the inside is will be strong enough with no extra holes

He needs to put a plate over the outside,..if he don`t, it will come undone durring use eventually !! He`s not gonna get a good edgebond espesiaclly when he tightens the fasteners !!

If he is gonna stick it in a museum case and leave it there, the repair can be done another way !!

The isolator is a great idea, the plate on the inside if thick enough should be fine with existing holes, just make a matching dummys for the other side !! You want it to sit right for the splay !!
