66 clubdates

Hey gents,

So I picked up this sweet little clubdate kit over the weekend. Dated feb of 66. 20, 14, 12, and a pioneer snare. Pretty much all there and in good shape to boot! I took it to rehearsal last night and I'm loving the tonality of these tubs. :) But, the toms sure don't seem to cut like my bigger Slingerland kits.... Now this is my first experience with 60's Ludwigs and also with smaller drums in general, so my question is this; should lack of volume be expected from a kit like this? Or is this the famous "ludwig tone?" :) I'm running the Ambassador X's for batters and coated Ambassadors for reso's. I'm playing heavier 60's brit rock. Looking for that Mick Avory sound. Any recomendations, insights, or oppinions would be a great help.

Thanks,

-Jon

Did you get this one from ebay seller Rocknfusion?

These are 3ply jazz sizes. Not sure what you expected. They don't project as well as larger drums and are built for warm woody tones. Mic them up. The Kinks music is pretty basic rock with loud guitars. You would do well to stay with a 22,13,16 setup with the 12 option if that's what you play. These smaller jazz kits really should be mic'ed up in a live situation playing that style of music. it's just going to continue to frustrate you and the band mates. These drums sound great. That's what you want to get across to the listener.

Jon, Oh man what a beauty clubbie kit. they are my favorite ludwig wood drums, what my bud mcjnic just said is right on the mark, Try Emperor heads on top and clear ambassadors on the bottom, that will give you more horsepower, the X heads are not letting these old shells sing, the emperors are 2 ply heads, I'm a hard hitter also, that will help promise.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Yes its the kit that was on ebay, super nice gent.

OK, I get what you are saying. When I was setting these up before practice I was thinking holy moly these sound good! But later they didn't quite cut through the band at our normal volume. I guess I'll just have to tell everyone to turn down a bit, no biggie we mic everything on stage anyway. I won't be giving these up anytime soon. Car Driving2

Any thoughts on better suited rock heads or should I stick with what I've got?

Man, that sucks. I contacted the seller January 1st and asked him specifics on this kit. He never said a word about it. All he spoke on was the rewrapped Slingy kit he had up. Dang it.

Ok thanks,

So is there much of a difference between the ambassador clears and the smooth whites for resos? I think I've got some of the latter laying around the studio...

yes. there is a slight difference. have you tried ludwig branded heads for that kit? they make a heavy coated that might fit your needs for a batter. they also make a medium coated that would sit nicely as a reso. look into them if you want.

Yeah,

I'm local and I brought cash. But I still had to talk him into letting me come take a look. I went to see the Slingys at first and realized they were a rewrap. I was about to walk. And he says "I've got another jazzer in the back....":D

OK guys,

Thanks a bunch. I'll have to do some puttering and I'll report back.

BTW the only thing that I can see on this kit that doesn't look quite right to me are the mufflers. This is my first Ludwig kit (I'm a Slingerland man) The mufflers are the black round knob type, 70's I think? Shouldn't a kit from this era have the lever style mufflers? At any rate, I took them off because they where rattling big time and I don't generally use them.
