60s Ludwig Gold Sparkle Snare - No Badge? Last viewed: 23 minutes ago

Just picked up a 5 piece 60s Ludwig kit. Its really a 20/14/12 (14 FT that is) in WMP, with a gold sparkle snare and 13" tom. Thing is, the snare (14") does not have a badge, or a hole where the badge would have been . I couldn't find any examples of a 60s Ludwig snare without a badge, but was wondering if anyone could give me some info on this Its a 6 lug (Pioneer?) mahogony/poplar/mahogony, painted interior. I was thinking maybe it isn't a Ludwig afterall, but all the hardware is Ludwig, there is a very faint red date stamp (MAY ? 19??). The gold sparkle 13" tom that matches does have a badge, wrap looks identical, serial number 123671, part of a Club Date perhaps? This one has a black date stamp (MAY 12 19??). Currently have it disassembled (cleaning it up) So, anyone seen a 60s wood snare with no badge before?

The snare drum is certainly a Pioneer! I can't recall seeing any Ludwig drums without badges. Maybe just a factory error? I'm sure our Ludwig experts will have some more info.

Definitely Ludwig. My guess is they simply forgot to install a badge.

That looks like faded Silver sparkle to me.

You might be right about the silver sparkle. (at least it began life as silver sparkle).

So thats sort of an oddity, no badge. Think this will affect value?

Probably does but I'm unsure in which direction. It's definitely a rarity in that somehow it escaped the factory without a badge...so its uniqueness might translate to being worth a bit more...then again someone might insist that without a badge it can't really be a Ludwig drum and therefore isn't worth as much as a Pioneer with a badge would be. I suppose it depends on how you present it and how a potential buyer sees it...half full or half empty.

The really pasted silver sparkle doesn't much help matters.

So I'm also realizing, no badge, no VENT. I still haven't got heads on this drum yet, I'm wondering how different this snare is gonna sound from a normal Pioneer. My '65 Slingerland kit has unvented toms and I love those toms to death. Best tom's I've played, they really sing. I wonder what an unvented snare sounds like though.
