60's Ludwig Flat Base stands-Base Section Differences? Last viewed: 50 minutes ago

Hello,

I know that the Ludwig 60's flat base stands were used for snare and cymbal stands. I know that the base sections for both the cymbal and snare stands were virtually the same, with the snare stand bases being just a bit shorter in height. To the best of my knowledge everything else was the same (leg length and spread etc). Am I correct on that?

Also, I know some stands have the moveable "collar" at the bottom of the stand that the wing screw threaded into like this:

And other stands have the wing screw thread directly into the stand like this:

What was the difference between the stands? Was it manufacturing years? Was it just random? Is there a difference in stability between the two? Does the non-collar version tend to strip out more than the collared version? Which is more common? If any of you fine folks could elighten me a bit on this, I would appreciate that.

I believe your first picture is a later model, as indicated by the non-script '70s' logo.

Thanks for the response. I've seen lots of stand bases with the collar but without the Ludwig logo. I'm not sure I've seen any with the script Ludwig logo. I have about 20 or so of these stand bases, and 15 of them have the collar, while 5 do not. Of the 15 that have the collar, only about 5 have the Ludwig 70's style logo, the rest are blank. I know they are Ludwigs though, because everything about the stands is the same (leg length, footprint etc.) and they also have the distinctive Ludwig wing screws.

I've seen a few "knock-off" stands from that era, and there is always something different about them from the Ludwigs that stands out as not quite right, and they always have different wing screws.

I don't think any of the 60s stands have the script logo on the collar. They're just blank. I think the block logo first appeared on the collar of the stands in 69. The late 50s early 60s have no collar.

The ones without the collar are definitely earlier. The collar was a big improvement because it prevents the down tube from getting a chewed up from the screw bearing directly on the tube.

Cool, thanks for the info, guys. Am I right when I say the was virtually no difference between the snare stand bases and the cymbal stand bases, except that the snare stand bases were just a tiny bit shorter?

that is correct. They are the same other than the length with the snare stand being shorter.
