60's Ludwig COB 402

Loading...

I have a line on a sure thing. pre serial number, crimped beds, etc. There's no doubting it. It's not an A plus, maybe a B... My question is what should I be willing to pay? I know the rarity, I just don't want to get "taken to the cleaners". What's fair market price? I appreciate your opinions and responses.

They're selling for between $1300. to $1600. on fleabay. There is one up for sale for $500. but it is riddled with holes! Anything under a $1000. would be a huge score. I recently acquired one in mint condition. Great, unique sounding drums.

I owned that 6.5 that's on ebay before the current owner. I sold it to him long distance via Craigslist. I believe he paid me $425 for it, and he was thrilled with it for the price. It was a great sounding drum! The extra holes are one pane clockwise from the original strainer and butt, almost as though someone years ago had attempted to install a Supersensitive strainer- not on the snare bed!!! Lame There is also one extra hole you can see in the pic (on Ebay) above the butt. Too bad, because the drum is (or was when I had it) all original in terms of hardware, and as I mentioned, fantastic sounding.

Here she is:

If I had the coin, I'd buy it back. If I had even more coin, I'd buy an even nicer one. These deep brass 402 Luddies are the sh*t.

I have the 6.5"x14" Pre-Serial COB Super-Sensitive version and they really are awesome sounding snares. Great tone because of the brass. I was lucky enough to find one in 9.5/10 condition. The 50+ year-old bugger looks damn near new too!

Thanks for your input, everyone. Much appreciated. I think I can get it for $1,000. I'll post pics when the deal is done.

make sure its brass if that's what you are expecting. there are pre serial models with crimped beds that are not brass. big difference in price..

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Gary - scour ebay for original Ludwig wires or the Pat. Pending ones with the amber colored plastic ends. For some reason, the original Ludwig snares always sound best. I think they used a lighter gage wire back then. Might have something to do with the sound they produce on the drum. I have a set of the Pat. Pendings on mine with original Ludwig heads and it kills.

Go 'original!'
