I have recently decided to collect a few orphaned 3-PLY shells and restoring them into a kit. I am going with a 16-14-12 set up. I started with thinking i would just get 3-ply shells, then decided i would go with one companies shells, and now thinking i can be patient to do it right and collect shells from the same company and era.
The best drum i have ever owned is my late 50's Slingerland 1-ply Maple super krupa radio king, So i was thinking i would aim for late 50's/pre-move Slingerland shells that are 3-ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany because i am assuming i would love that sound.
I created this thread because i am second guessing my self a bit. I am wondering if any one had any advice on other 3ply shells i might want to aim for and why. I am particularly curious about the 60's slingerland 3-ply's that where mahogany/poplar/maple and how the compare to the mahogany/poplar/mahogany 50's shells.
Any advice or words of reason would be helpful in my time of drum purchasing insecurity.
Thank you
