I saw a 30's Slingerland Cloud Badge Bass Drum (12 x 26) with a single tension tuning system that I am interested in buying to go along with my 70's 3ply toms. What are opinions on using something like this for a rock kit? Do you think this type of system make the drum too uncontrollable?

Well, just as VM2K said, those old things work pretty well!
I picked up an unbadged 12 (think, may be a 10) X 24 on eBay for like $15.00. For the longest time, it served as a light in my office.
Then, I got this wild idea! (insert mysterious music)
I have a small collection of orphans, Ludwig and Slingerland mostly. All older 3 ply stuff. I took the poor old calf heads off (torn mostly) and put some WK's on, put a couple clamp on spurs and matched it with a Ludwig BOP 13" rack tom (pre serial) and a late 60's Ludwig 16" FT... I don't remember what snare I used.
WOW! It was really sweet! The only thing that bothered me was the bass did tend to travel some. It's 3 ply as well and just too lite. I goofed around with it at home for a few days after the gig and found that the old clamp on front spikes pretty much cures that.
Oddly enough, I've grown to really like frankenkits (jellybean kits if in polite company), that was the first I had put together.
Good luck!
